McNamara | ‘I thought we were magnificent’

Dan McNamara expressed his delight with his side’s first-half performance as they defeated Rugby Borough 4-0 in the FA WNL.

Three goals from Amber Hughes, Georgia Marshall and Charlotte Greengrass were enough to send the Old Gold into half-time with a 3-0 lead before Abi Loydon added a fourth in the last attack of the game.

McNamara touched on the performance of the team, his side’s superb set pieces, as well as an impressive statistic.

On the performance

“I thought we were magnificent in the first 35 minutes. I thought we completely blew them away.

“It always helps with a quick start. [For the first goal] I actually thought we'd missed the chance - it was a fabulous save from their goalkeeper, and then Amber [Hughes] followed it in and sent us on our way.

“Then two more really well-worked goals, one from a set piece, which, obviously, we pride ourselves on, and I thought we were terrific in that first half.

“The shape and the way in which we asked them to play really showed, and the way they executed the game plan, as I said, I thought they were excellent.

“Nothing is won yet, nothing is lost yet. I think the girls are just doing their job and going about their business. As I've said before, if Burnley win their next two, then I will congratulate them. And if they don't, we’ve got to be ready to pounce.”

On using set-pieces and crosses to our advantage

“We wanted to get balls in the box. We felt that was an area where we could hurt Rugby with balls in the box, so you could see that quite early on. But look, when you’ve got the players that we have at our disposal, I think there's always threats from everywhere.

“I was more pleased with the intensity of the play, certainly without the ball. I thought one-versus-one duels in that first half - we really did take control. So, it was an outstanding performance.

“Then the second half is always a little bit different. Rugby were never going to come out and play the same way, but they changed some stuff at half-time and they did look a little bit more threatening in that second half, but at 3-0 up you’ve just got to soak up the pressure, take the sting out the game, and try and play on the counter-attack, which is what we did.

“Obviously, we got rewarded with another goal at the end.”

On the impressive individual performances from the team

“We were laughing with Abi [Loydon] at the end. It was a really well-taken goal. I thought KJ [Katie Johnson] did really well, she looked like a number nine gliding past their centre half!

“So, delighted for Abi. She deserves that after the last few weeks. She’s had some great performances.

“Charlotte [Greengrass] and Amber [Hughes], they're phenomenal. I thought that was probably one of Charlotte's best games. Her hold-up play tonight was outstanding.

“And they're both lively in front of the goal. So, delighted, but I also think if you look at the other end of the pitch, you've got Anna Morphet, throwing her body on the line to keep it at 3-0, 90 minutes.

“You've got AJ [Abbi Jenner] clearing it off the line to keep it 3-0 in the 93rd minute. It means a lot to the girls - the goals and the clean sheets, and just winning for this football club.

On the fact that Wolves have not conceded a home league goal in 2026

“I didn't know that. I didn't know that as a stat, it’s a fantastic stat.

“I have just been told we've matched our league points tally from last year, which again is brilliant with two games to go, but it just shows the quality of the league now with the teams coming into it.

“We've equalled our points tally, and we're still probably not going to win the title. So, it's a great advert for the game, but obviously we've got to keep working, keep going and see if we can get the last six points available.”
