Women's Report | Wolves 5-0 Hull City

Wolves 5 (Hughes 4, 64 Greengrass 25 Quigley 80 Worsey 81) Hull City 0

Wolves Women comfortably overcame Hull City Ladies at the SEAH Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

A perfect start to the afternoon saw Amber Hughes net inside five minutes, before Charlotte Greengrass doubled the home side’s lead on 25 minutes.

Three second-half goals from Hughes, Racheal Quigley and Louanne Worsey put the three points beyond doubt.

The Old Gold started perfectly and settled any potential nerves swiftly, with Hughes striking inside the opening five minutes. Alex Brooks sent a searching ball upfield for Hughes to latch onto, she composed herself in front of an onrushing Rebecca Sidwell and lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Despite sustained pressure on the Hull goal, Hope Knight offered a threat on the counter-attack for the visitors. Brooks was called into action for the first time when Knight flashed an effort across goal, but the Wolves shot stopper comfortably gathered.

Wolves, though, soon tamed the warning signs and added to the scoreline themselves. The hosts impressively progressed the ball through the thirds and found Beth Roberts down the left flank, who squared a ball across goal for Greengrass to lash home from inside the six-yard-box.

The hosts continued to dominate proceedings but came no closer to extending the lead before half-time than two long range efforts. First, Worsey tested Sidwell, but the Hull keeper gathered comfortably.

Moments later, Tammi George - on her return to the SEAH Stadium - had Sidwell interested, but failed to find the net.

The restart was marred by a scrappy opening five minutes, but Wolves soon found their rhythm again as Greengrass met Roberts’ delivery but headed wide of the mark.

Knight continued to pose a threat in transition for the Tigress’, and came inches away from providing her side a way back into the contest. Knight struck from 25 yards out and it looked to be heading into the top corner, but a superb Brooks save turned the effort onto the crossbar and away to safety.

Wolves’ afternoon continued to improve and Hughes was central to it. Casey Howe delivered a low cross which found Hughes inside the six-yard-box, who calmly steered home.

McNamara’s side notably limited their opposition to few opportunities and kept them at arm’s length for the majority of the afternoon, allowing them to further trouble the scoreline themselves.

Approaching the final 10 minutes, substitutes Howe and Quigley made their mark on the game. Howe drove down the right flank and lifted a perfect cross into the path of Quigley, who impressively lifted a leg and steered a volley into the back of the net.

Just minutes later, Wolves further extended their lead through Worsey. The forward struck from range, catching Sidwell in the Hull goal off guard, and wonderfully found the corner of the net.

Knowing goal difference will be crucial heading into the final stages of the season, Wolves remained hungry for more goals. Quigley came close to netting her second of the afternoon after meeting Anna Morphet’s delivery, but her header failed to find the net.

Moments later, Chloe Williams looked to bend a dangerous effort goalwards, but her strike lacked the necessary curl to stay on target.

Wolves eventually settled for the five goals, and comfortably saw out a dominant victory.
