Women's Report | Sporting Khalsa 0-3 Wolves

Sporting Khalsa 0 Wolves Women 3 (Hughes 34 & 68 & Greengrass 61)

Wolves Women returned to FAWNL action as they defeated Sporting Khalsa 3-0 at the Guardian Warehousing Stadium.

An Amber Hughes brace and Charlotte Greengrass strike saw the Old Gold record their first league win of the new year, and close the gap to leaders Burnley.

After a series of postponements due to poor weather conditions, Wolves were finally back in action for the first time in nearly a month.

Cascading rain and chilling wind greeted the players as they made their way onto the pitch, as the weather was determined to play its part in yet another FAWNL match.

Tammi George almost made an immediate impact on her return to the club. A Chloe Williams cross was headed goalbound by George, but Natalie Hall was untroubled by her effort.

Wolves continued to probe for an opening goal as they patiently worked the ball up and down the pitch. A couple of Old Gold corners failed to test Hall, but the pressure from the away side started to build.

The visitors conjured up two opportunities on the half-hour mark. The first fell to Louanne Worsey, whose 30-yard strike hit the post and bounced favourably to George. However, the latter drilled a half volley onto the crossbar, which left the hosts relieved.

However, just four minutes later, a brilliant tackle by Charlotte Greengrass meant the Wolves attacker was able to slot in Hughes, who clinically slid the ball past substitute goalkeeper Katy-Jay Smith.

The Old Gold looked to turn the screw on Khalsa and almost doubled their lead after a brilliant piece of interchange between Worsey and George saw the former curl an effort just wide of the Khalsa goal.

Few chances followed, but Wolves went into the interval with a one-goal advantage.

Half Time | Sporting Khalsa 0-1 Wolves

The second half started in the same vein as the first. Wolves began on the front foot and almost found the back of the net after Hughes swivelled on the ball, before drilling a ranged effort just wide of the near post.

Khalsa made a rare surge into Old Gold territory in the 50th minute, but Alex Brooks was alive to a low cross, preventing the hosts from scoring.

Order was soon restored, though. Wolves doubled their lead through Greengrass. New signing Casey Howe delivered a perfect cross less than a minute after coming on, with the goalscorer nodding past Smith.

Brooks was soon called into action again as she made a superb save to deny Lowri Walker from close range. The hosts began to attack as they looked to salvage something from the encounter.

With just under 20 minutes to go, Wolves put to bed any Khalsa comeback hopes. Hughes found the back of the net for her brace with a wonderful, drilled strike from 20 yards out.

The visitors looked to further extend their lead with a flurry of late chances, but the score remained the same as Wolves recorded their first league victory of 2026.
