Merrick | ‘I couldn’t be prouder’

Beth Merrick was beaming with pride after her outstanding goal helped Wolves secure a 2-0 victory over Stoke on Friday night, sending them through to the third round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

She couldn’t be more pleased with Wolves’ second half performance, backing her teammates all the way. Merrick spoke passionately about her love for the club and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the fans for their incredible support on such a historic night, broadcast live on TNT Sports.

On her love for the FA Cup

“I think all the quotes have been about how much I love it; I think I said it maybe once or twice and it’s stuck.

“Listen, I was quite frustrated at half time and I felt like I had dropped a two out of ten performance, so it was really important for me to create a moment for this team and I am so glad that I did because I think we were disappointed but I still think that we were in control.

“I never felt that we were out of the game at all, so it’s a sign of a good team when we don’t quite play as good as we wanted to but actually come away with a 2-0 scoreline. That second goal from ‘Quigs’ really settled me down because I was a bag of nerves up until that point.”

On her outstanding goal

“I hadn’t had much luck all night so it was really pleasing for it to come in the way that it did and probably at a really good time. I think it really killed all the momentum that Stoke had and to go on then and score that second one like Quigs did, it was amazing. I think the goals came at the perfect time.”

On the tough opposition

“Stoke are a really difficult team to play, up until this year they have been our bogie team to play over the last couple of years.

“So, to do what we’ve done the last three times we have come up against them, the others finished 2-1, they were ridiculously close and I have definitely said in an interview recently that we probably haven’t played that well against them.

“We weren’t overly comfortable at half time but I never felt that we were going to concede, I never felt that there were moments where we let ourselves down so, to come away with a 2-0 win, I think it was deserved and I’m so glad that I could help and the goals couldn’t have come at more perfect timing.”

On the tremendous support from the fans

“Even last week against Loughborough, it was an amazing crowd so to have doubled it this week is just incredible. You heard them loud and proud, you heard everything that they said, they really spurred us on.

“Someone said something in the dugout before the game about ‘make them give us the energy’ so feed off what they give us, and they absolutely did. The roar when the first goal went in was amazing and just an absolute credit to the staff that have worked tirelessly to make sure that we get the crowd that women’s football deserves.

“I’ve definitely said it tonight but, it’s an amazing opportunity for TNT to showcase women’s football outside of the top two leagues and hopefully we have done it justice.”

On her love for the club

“I sometimes struggle to put into words how much this club means to me and we’ve been through some tough times and some amazing times, both for the women’s section and the men’s section. It’s a family, so the girls and staff that are here, we are just united in having the same goal which is to make sure that we do everything possible to do this club proud.

“We bring people here that aren’t Wolves fans, and we make them Wolves fans, and that is what I am most proud of, that people see the club in the most amazing light. I couldn’t be prouder, the fact that people celebrate like it means everything to them, like when Quigs scored, the reaction that she had, for me it’s just really wholesome.

“I adore this club, it’s such a family thing for me, to have a manager like Macca, who is Liverpool through and through, but to adopt Wolves into his heart like he has, means the world.”
