Hughes | 'The feel of the group is that it was going to come'

Amber Hughes feels her late winner against Loughborough Lightning to make it 14 victories on the bounce for Wolves Women could be one of the team’s standout games when looking back at the end of the season.

With the game into the fourth added minute, the striker latched onto Racheal Quigley’s clever back heel to fire the ball into the net from a tight angle to put her side 3-2 up in the last kick of the game, leading to incredible celebrations from the players and staff.

Despite being 2-1 down at the break, Hughes admits she never felt like the team’s winning run was going to be under threat and felt the belief in the team was going to get them through.

On her last-minute winner

“The ideal situation is winning comfortably, but sometimes those games are a bit more special.

“Going forward with what we want to achieve this year, maybe that will be a standout game that in months to come we’ll look back on and say we were able to get through.

“We’re knocking on the door, we want to keep winning and picking up points, but it’s just a show of togetherness.

“There was relief as well, but we were all congratulating people and getting around people because we’ve gone and done what we needed to do, and we did it.”

On getting onto Quigley’s assist

“That got a bit lost in the moment. Fair due to Quigs, she’s come on, she’s done her job and she’s played a brilliant ball.

“To be honest, I thought I was offside, but I just thought I’d run for it and hit it and I was just so glad. I think the celebrations were just brilliant.”

On setting up Greengrass

“Char is a goalscorer and she’ll always get on the end of the deliveries. There were a few in the game today that could have gone either way, but Char will always carry on regardless.

“She’s got that grit and determination and she will score goals, but away from that, she does contribute so much more to the game. She’s a great team player.”

On confidence in turning the game around

“This year, the feel of the group is that it was going to come.

“At half time, there were quite a few tough words which I think were all fair because we weren’t happy with the scoreline, not necessarily the performance, because I think we worked well in the first half but should have been in a more comfortable position.

“But I think this group have got such a togetherness that everybody thought coming out in that second half that we would turn the game around.”

On an FA Cup clash live on TNT this Friday night

“We’re all excited for the game, but mainly we all want to do the job in hand as well. It’s going to be a massive occasion for ourselves and for our friends and families, but we want to get through to the next round of the FA Cup.

“That will be our full focus this week, but ultimately it will be a great occasion for everyone.”
