McNamara | 'Winning not at our best is a good trait'

Dan McNamara believes his Wolves Women side can show even more sides to their game, despite them chalking up another victory against Middlesbrough on Sunday.

A Beth Merrick brace within the opening ten minutes was enough to see Wolves Women secure the three points against Boro at the SEAH Stadium.

The victory meant the Old Gold remain unbeaten in the FAWNL this term, having secured ten points from a possible 12, but the head coach is demanding even more from his side.

On the Boro performance

“Eight minutes in, I thought we were going to get a show of just how good this group really is, but we have come off after 90 minutes feeling quite disappointed. After the second goal, I thought we stopped doing what we were doing.

“At half-time, we spoke about how we had the opportunities to make it three or four and really take the game away from Middlesbrough, but it was a very mild performance.”

On the importance of winning regardless

“Winning when we are not at our best is a good trait to have. We got the job done with two fantastic goals from Beth Merrick – I thought she was outstanding today.

“I said to the girls at full-time, well done, but I’m just not quite satisfied. We keep the pressure on at the top of the table, we did our job, that’s all we can do.”

On the injury suffered by Loydon

“I thought it [the challenge] was a nasty one, to be honest. There wasn’t much need for it right at the end of the game. Middlesbrough are whole-hearted and really want to fight, but I think they just caught her [Loydon] on the ankle and I took her off as a precaution.”

On the trip to Hull

“They [Hull] have started on fire – it is a tough place to go at the minute. We have got to make sure we are ready, it is one of those places you’ve got to go and fight and want to compete. We have got to be ready to go and have a battle.”
