Women's report | Wolves 3-1 Man United PGA

Wolves 3 (Greengrass 53, Quigley 59, Hiscox 90+5) Manchester United PGA 1 (Drury 50)

Wolves Women continued their perfect start in the FA Women’s National League Cup this season with a comfortable victory over Manchester United PGA at Compton Park.

Goals from Racheal Quigley, Charlotte Greengrass and Amelia Hiscox claimed the three points for the Old Gold against United’s under-21 side, making it two wins from two for Dan McNamara’s group.

Wolves’ intent was clear from the very start and they wasted no time in getting forward – Katie Johnson was first to test Kayla Rendell, before Quigley’s long-range effort struck the crossbar.

Bec Thomas was then called upon and denied Tamira Livingston from point-blank range, and moments later it was Kayla Rendell’s turn to deny Jade Cross at the other end.

Abbie Jenner produced some vital pieces of defending at the end of the first half, denying both Livingston and Layla Drury from advancing forward.

Then, seconds before the first 45 came to a close, Anna Grey struck the post with a powerful effort, with Wolves unable to turn their dominance into a lead.

Despite that control Wolves enjoyed in the first half, they were set an uphill task when United’s Layla Drury slotted past Thomas on the 50th minute to give the visitors the lead.

However, it took McNamara’s side three minutes to get back on level terms. Cross’ inviting pass bounced off the crossbar and dropped into the path of Greengrass, who made no mistake in front of goal.

Greengrass then turned to the provider when Wolves took the lead in the game for the first time near the hour mark. Her scooped pass was perfect for Quigley, and she cleverly nodded the ball past the onrushing Rendell to add a second goal for the hosts.

Wolves continued to probe at the United defence, but Greengrass couldn’t find her second, while Beth Merrick and Chloe Williams found themselves in good positions but were unfortunate not to find the back of the net.

Hiscox then sealed the points for Wolves deep into additional time. She was set by Cross and her strike deflected off Drury past Rendell, who was heading for the opposite corner, to complete the win.
