Beth Merrick says Wolves showed good composure to see out their victory over Rugby Borough at the weekend, after the hosts pushed Dan McNamara’s side to the final kick.
The Old Gold were comfortable at 3-0, but two goals in the final five minutes from the Rugby ensured a nervy ending, but Wolves showed their experience to see out the win and maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.
Merrick, who has featured in every match this season, is now turning her attention to a League Cup tie with Manchester United Professional Game Academy, and is looking for the positive momentum to be maintained.
On the performance and three points
“I think the score probably flatters them a little bit, I think we were well deserved of the three goals, and it was just a shame we conceded in the manner that we did. Teams will struggle to play here; it’s a tough place to come.
“I think they had the first half to be fair; we rode our luck and scored a goal against the run of play – sometimes that’s just how it happens. We’ve had times when we’ve been on top and haven’t scored so actually to go in the way that we did was really powerful.”

On maintaining focus during stop-start game
“It’s difficult when you’re chasing a goal but equally when you’re three nil up you’re quite happy about it, it was stop-start due to the manner of what’s happened. It didn’t help but, in the end, it wasn’t so bad.
“It’s hard to stay composed, I think we just need to sort out some of the little things like individual details. Macca always tells us how the finer details will always impact us in games, and we don’t intentionally do anything wrong, but we’ll assess things on Tuesday.
“All round the pitch there’s little things we could’ve done better so I think we’re a little bit disappointed to concede two.”
On attention turning to Manchester United
“They’ll be young and hungry, certainly younger than I am.
“It’ll be interesting to see what they’re like. Obviously, our staff will do the amazing work they do with the details.
“We really want a good cup run and replicate our form in the League Cup. It’s really important we use the squad, get in this week and get the three points.”
