Women's report | Rugby 2-3 Wolves

Rugby Borough 2 (Greenslade 85 & 90+11) Wolves Women 3 (Hughes 40 & 50, Sims 68)

Wolves Women extended their unbeaten start to the season with a determined victory over Rugby Borough on Sunday afternoon.

A brace from Amber Hughes and a powerful strike from Amy Sims secured three points for Wolves, despite a late fightback from hosts late and two efforts from Lily Greenslade.

In what was a tight affair at Kilsby Lane, Wolves started the brighter and created early chances through Beth Merrick and Hughes, which failed to break the deadlock.

Alex Brookes was called upon on the 34th minute when her fingertip save denied Sofia Mallon from giving Rugby the advantage.

Wolves eventually opened the scoring five minutes before half-time – Louanne Worsey’s cross to the back post was perfect for Hughes to head over Nyla Peterkin.

Half-time | Rugby 0-1 Wolves

Hughes got her second goal of the afternoon shortly after the restart when she stretched to get on the end of an inviting cross from Katie Johnson and double Wolves’ advantage.

That second goal gave the visitors a cushion in the fixture and, with substitutions being introduced, Wolves were able to control the fixture to their pleasing.

A stunning strike from Sims made it three for Dan McNamara’s side with just over 20 minutes to play. Following a quick one-two with Rowsey, her effort rifled off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Despite Wolves' comfortable control, the hosts piled on the pressure in the final stages of the game with Greenslade netting twice, but McNamara’s side did well to defend and seal the victory.
