Women's report | Wolves 0-0 Burnley

Wolves Women earnt a hard-fought point against Burnley after a spirited performance on Sunday afternoon.

The SEAH Stadium played host for the first time in the 2025/26 FAWNL campaign, as two of last season’s top four sides clashed in a contest overspilling with quality.

Wolves arguably created the two best chances of the game - one in each half. However, Amy Sims had an effort cleared off the line in the first half, before Georgia Marshall had her effort miraculously saved in the dying minutes against her former side.

A second consecutive clean sheet means Wolves are yet to concede in the league this campaign, showcasing a strong defence featuring a handful of new summer signings who have undoubtedly settled in well.

Both sides enjoyed early spells of possession, but Dan McNamara made his intentions clear, with an efficient high-press stifling Burnley’s central creative players.

Following the hard work, Wolves thought they had the opener when Sims saw her header cleared off the line by Jasmine Matthews’ outstretched boot.

Burnley then created a couple of opportunities to break the deadlock approaching the half-hour mark. First, Brenna McPartlin picked out Olivia Wilkes - free at the back post - but her volleyed effort drifted wide.

Moments later, Matthews should have done better when the ball fortuitously fell into her path following a Burnley set-piece, but she could only blaze her effort over the crossbar.

Claudia Walker went close heading into the break, but she was denied by a superb Marshall block to keep the score all-square heading into half-time.

Wolves knew they would need a strong second-half performance - similar to the first - if they were to come away with a result. However, it was Burney who applied the early pressure on the Wolves goal.

Charley Docherty had a chance to bundle the ball home after a spell of pinball in the Wolves penalty area, but Alex Brooks was alert to the danger and collected the loose ball.

The Clartes continued to push, and Millie Ravening was next to try her luck with a header goalwards. Thanks to Beth Roberts’ defending, however, Ravening was forced to send her effort over.

In a game where chances were hard to come by for the hosts, Wolves dug deep and fought for every ball, underpinned by the superb defensive display.

As stoppage time approached, former Burnley player Marshall thought she had done enough to earn her side a winner. Becky Anderson delivered a superb free-kick for Marshall to meet, and she stuck out a leg to direct an effort goalwards - only for Kirstie Levell to somehow keep out by tipping it onto the crossbar and over.

Docherty had the final chance of the game when the ball fell to her inside the penalty area. However, a triple effort from Sims, Beth Roberts and Lindsey Harkin denied her the decisive strike.
