Amber Hughes made an instant impact off the bench as she secured Wolves Women all three points in added time against Stoke City in their first game of the FAWNL Cup group stage.
Amber Hughes and Charlotte Greengrass contributed to the victory on Sunday evening as the Old Gold defeated Stoke by two goals to one, placing them at the top of their group, and the forward reflected on her last-minute winner while looking ahead to their clash against Burnley.
On the team’s performance
“I think it was a tough battle, and we dominated the first half, we had a lot of the ball, and it could’ve been two or three nil at half-time; we just didn’t take those chances.
“However, the second half is when they came out firing and made it a different game for us. I think they got themselves back into the game and built their momentum back up and got the goal so ultimately it was a level playing field and a case of who wants it more.
“Obviously, it’s great to get that last minute goal but I think like Macca has just said, that’s really important for us going into Sunday’s game, we all know what kind of game it will be, but we will take that momentum from tonight will be massive for us.”
On her last-minute winner
“On a personal level it’s great, I love scoring goals for the club but as a team, it was the effort, the ball from Lou [Worsey] and the build-up play and everything else around it.
“Although I’m the one that puts the ball in the net, there’s a lot that goes on behind it. On a personal level I’m glad to get on the scoresheet again.”
On the importance of the three points in the group stage
“They’ll be massively important, it’s a tough group as were coming up against teams that we don’t know much about, so it’ll be tough for us to know exactly what we’re going into.
“Stoke are a tough side as well so to get all three points on the first game of the cup run is so important for us so it’s a job well done.”
On getting an assist from summer signing Worsey
“She’s settled in great; it’s almost like she’s been here for ages; all the girls have settled in well really.
“I think we’ve cracked on and got a really good squad now and I think it’s going to be tough for Macca to choose an 11 because he’s got an outstanding squad of players.
“We’re all getting on really well and I think there’s a really good atmosphere between us all where we are all reaching for the same goal and hopefully come the end of the season, we will be there.”
On facing Burnley this weekend
“Momentum will be so important for us to get the three points. I think if we weren’t to have come away with a win tonight, we all would’ve thought that we could’ve got more from the game.
“I think getting the three points tonight and knowing that we can win in the last moment pushes us more.
“When we are at Burnley, we might have one or two chances but if we can put them away then that will be the difference but we’re not looking at that game as a title decider, we take each game as it comes and we’ve got them early doors so we will be looking to do what we do every week.”
