McNamara | 'A very positive start'

Dan McNamara says he was ‘really pleased’ with his side’s opening day victory over Liverpool Feds on Sunday afternoon.

Wolves Women were dominant 4-0 victors on Merseyside, starting their 2025/26 FAWNL campaign on a positive note, with a number of debutants also impressing in old gold.

Goals from Amber Hughes, Louanne Worsey, Beth Merrick and Amy Sims all netted, with Wolves 3-0 at the break after a dominant first-half. McNamara touched on the performance, his new signings, next week’s double header and looking ahead with positivity.

On the performance

“I'm really pleased, the girls know it's a really tough place to come, especially in weather like this, on this astroturf, it's tough. So, to come up here and score four goals and keep a clean sheet, we’re really pleased.

“It’s a new group and we've got work to do to get the best out of them, but that's a very positive start and we're really excited looking forward to the week ahead.”

On four different goal scorers and new signings

“Amber scores goals, that's what she's done for the last four years at the club. It was really nice to see Louanne [Worsey] come in and really stamp her authority on the game - I thought she was excellent.

“Same with all the new signings, and away from the goal scorers, I thought Lindsey Harkin was brilliant at the back, as well as Georgia Marshall - she was outstanding.

“What a shift Amy Sims put in, but we’ve added a lot of players in, so it's going to take time to come together and understand how each of us want to play. That's a really good platform for us to start and we’re really looking forward to taking that into the week.”

On next week’s double header

“Stoke on Wednesday is the first of the cup games with the new format, which we are looking forward to.

“Then on Sunday it's about us testing ourselves against the best team in the league. With the finances going into Burnley, I think the pressure is truly on them to probably not lose a game with the signings they've made.

“But we'll be there to cause problems and see if we can come through those games with points and progression in the cup.”

On looking ahead with positivity

“We got plenty of minutes in players, but we've also got players on the side such as Anna Grey and Anna Morphet who are ready to come in and impact the squad.

“We’ve got players not getting on the pitch again today, so it's a really healthy squad we've put together with 22, 23 outstanding players.

“I’ve said to them before, whatever your role is week-to-week you have to do it with utmost positivity, we need good vibes around the dressing room all season if we're going to achieve what we're trying to achieve this year, and hopefully we take it into the week.”
