Sims signs for Wolves Women

Amy Sims has become Wolves Women’s first new addition of the summer with the midfielder adding goal scoring quality to Dan McNamara’s side.

The 26-year-old, who captained childhood club Derby County before moving to Nottingham Forest last year, brings versatility and a wealth of experience in the Women’s National League to Wolves.

Having come through the Rams’ women’s academy, Sims played in various positions across the pitch before making the move from right back to attacking midfield during the 2022/23 season.

Over the next two campaigns, she would go on to score 40 goals, while also claiming the Northern Premier Division’s Golden Boot award in 2023 and netting the winner in Derby’s FAWNL Plate final triumph the following year.

Manager Dan McNamara believes bringing a player of Sims’ quality and experience to Wolves will prove to be a ‘statement signing’ for the women’s first-team.

“I’m delighted to have been able to bring Amy to Wolves,” McNamara said. “I’ve known her for a few years, and she used to cause us all kinds of problems. She’s an excellent, all-rounded player, and she’s got so much ability, energy, aggression and she’s technically really clean, so I’m delighted.

“I think this a bit of a statement from the football club that we went out and did some business early and got someone of her calibre over the line because she’s tried and tested in tier three, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she can bring.

“She’s so versatile and she can do a lot, but you also know what you’re going to get from Amy as she’ll do whatever she needs to for the team – she’s a real team player with a great attitude and has an ambition to play higher in the football pyramid, so I’m delighted to get it done and hopefully we can go on a good journey together over next few years.”

Sims has been part of several opposition teams to have gone up against Wolves in recent years, including featuring in Forest’s crucial victory over the Old Gold at Telford’s SEAH Stadium last season which proved to be the difference between the title-chasing sides.

Now she will cross the divide and pull on the gold and black shirt this season and McNamara is looking forward to finally being on the same side as his latest signing.

“You often highlight the best players within the opposition when you go through your analysis and I said to Amy when she first came in that finally we can start working together, rather than against each other, because I’m sick of the effort of planning to try to stop her.

“I’m really looking forward to what she’s going to bring because she’s a great character and will add to the dressing room as well as to the football pitch.

“I know what Amy is capable of and I hope she hits the ground running because – ability-wise – she’s top drawer. She knows this league inside out so hopefully we can really push on to where we both want to be working.”
