Marshall | ‘I’m really proud of the girls’

Georgia Marshall was pleased with her teammates' efforts after Wolves Women were narrowly defeated 2-1 by WSL 2 side Nottingham Forest in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup Third Round.

Marshall scored in front of the television cameras to give the Old Gold a route back into the game after Forest went into the interval with a two-goal lead.

The Wolves defender gave her thoughts on the performance, playing against a side from the league above, and the incredible year Wolves have had.

On the performance

“I think the girls showed a lot of fight. We showed what we’re about. We're all about grit and determination, and we carried on until the end.

“[Emily] Batty made a couple of great saves, so it could have been 2-2. We could have even won it in the end, so yeah, I'm really proud of the girls.”

On playing against a WSL 2 side

“I think [we matched Forest] for the majority of the game, to be honest. A lot of the game was played in the middle of the pitch or even in their half, so I think we've shown what we're about and that we could compete at that level.”

On the response to conceding two first-half goals

“It's not ideal to concede two early on, but I just thought to myself, we just need to settle. We just need to get to grips with the game and do what we do well, which is winning balls and winning duels. And we ended up doing that in the end.

“[The half-time message was] to just believe in ourselves, to know that we can do it and we can compete and bring a goal back or even go on to win it.

“So that motivated us all, and we all came out and pushed them to the end.”

On scoring her goal

“I don’t know about that! [on becoming more prolific]

“I’m getting on the end of a few, so it makes a change because usually I don’t score many, so I’m happy with that [the goal].

“You can always count on Morph [Anna Morphet] to put in them great deliveries. That's her game, that's what she can do so well.”

On appearing on the television in successive FA Cup rounds

“It might not have been our day today, but we've been part of history. It's been a real honour to be broadcast on TV twice on the bounce.

“It doesn't happen often, and it's never happened to me, so for it to happen two times in a season, it’s a real pleasure.”

On the brilliant year that Wolves have had

“Macca [Dan McNamara] went on about this big run that they've gone on [when I joined], so many games unbeaten, it's nearly been a year, so everyone should be really proud.

“To taste defeat to a team [in a league] above, we can't really complain.”
