Women's Report | Wolves 2-1 Rugby Borough

Wolves 2 (Sims 40, Marshall 53,) Rugby Borough 1 (Camwell 84)

Wolves Women progressed into the second-round proper of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Rugby Borough at the SEAH Stadium on Sunday Afternoon.

A first-half strike from Amy Sims and a second-half goal from Georgia Marshall secured the Old Gold their spot in the next round of the competition.

Dan McNamara’s side began the game on the slow side as Borough opened the game with plenty of attempts at goal but were unsuccessful.

Wolves soon grew into the game as five minutes in they had a close attempt to open the scoring as Charlotte Greengrass and Beth Merrick ran through the middle, firing the ball to Louanne Worsey’s feet whose shot cleared over the goal.

Wanderers continued to search for a goal as Amber Hughes had multiple runs down the left-hand side but couldn't find the cross through a resolute Rugby defence.

Merrick made a promising run from the inside of her own half into Rugby’s box as she has a shot on target, but Peterkin denies Wolves a chance at taking the lead.

Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute as Sims struck from just inside the box and drilled the ball into the bottom right corner past Peterkin to make it 1-0.

Borough almost hit back before the break as they rattled the crossbar, but Wolves held firm to secure the lead going into half time.

Wolves picked up where they left off after the break, as Amber Hughes continued to cause problems down the right as her early shot was saved by Peterkin.

Not long after, Wolves doubled their lead when Merrick’s pinpoint corner found Marshall at the back post, who bundled the ball home through a crowded six-yard box.

Dan McNamara’s side maintained control throughout the half, creating a string of chances through Hughes and Merrick, while the defence stood firm to limit Borough’s opportunities.

Rugby pulled one back late on through substitute Camwell, but Wolves managed the game well in the closing stages as Alex Brooks produced a strong save to deny a late equaliser — sealing a well-deserved 2-1 victory and progression to the next round.
