McNamara | 'The goals were very well worked.'

Dan McNamara praised his side’s second-half performance that saw Wolves Women advance past Hednesford Town in the Birmingham Challenge Cup.

Wolves were comfortable 12-0 winners against their opponents on Sunday afternoon, progressing through to the second round of the County Cup. Charlotte Greengrass netted her first career double hat-trick, complemented by Amber Hughes’ hat-trick and Katie Johnson’s brace, underlined with a goal from Jade Cross.

McNamara touched on the performance that saw his side score the most they have in a single game so far this season, and Greengrass’ clinical goalscoring display. Debutant Milly Robertson and the returning Anna Morphet both received praise, as well as the Wolves boss speaking about opening their FA Cup campaign next Sunday against Rugby Borough.

On the performance

“I thought we coasted through the first half. I said to the girls at half-time, people haven't turned up to watch us plod through to the next round. I want to see smiling faces, some aggression and real determination to put on a performance.

“I wanted to see the crowd get off their feet and I thought the second half they definitely did that, scoring another eight goals, I thought the goals were very well worked.

“Big hats off to Hednesford Town as well, what they're trying to do here is superb, the girls gave it their all today. I thought their staff set them up to be very hard to break down, and looking at the facilities it’s first-class, so hats off to them, but also delighted to get through to the next round.”

On Charlotte Greengrass’ six goals

“Charlotte is very clever at putting herself in the right place and I thought you saw that today. People say the ball falls to her but actually she is really instinctive as a number nine, and she knows where the ball is going to drop so I’m delighted for Charlotte.

“She likes scoring goals and that will give her loads of confidence, one or two is ok but to get six is phenomenal.”

On Anna Morphet and Milly Robertson

“Morph, we've missed her. I’ve been very vocal about that over the last few months. I think the girls have been fantastic over the past few months though without her. I’m glad to add her back to our arsenal going forward now.

“I think if you're not excited about what you've seen by Milly Robertson in the first 30 minutes of her Wolves career then I'm not too sure you know much about football because I thought she was tremendous considering the length of time she has been out.

“I thought she was exciting any time she got the ball, you could hear the crowd any time she got the ball, and she’s obviously assisted two and a half goals - I think the keeper just got a touch on the third one.

“It’s fantastic to see her back on the pitch, and I've just said to the girls, we've got a tough two weeks now and we're going to need the full squad of 22. We've all got to be ready to pull on the shirt whenever we are asked to, so really looking forward to seeing how they embed back into the group.”

On opening our FA Cup campaign next week

“The last few years I think the draws have been quite kind to us, but this year we've got to start really hard, Rugby are a tough outfit - we know that.

“We had a game a few weeks ago down there in the league and came away with three points, but we've got to be ready. This is the start of a really tough two weeks.

“We want to make sure we're ready to perform in all the competitions, we need to get points back on the board starting a week on Wednesday, but we can't look further than Rugby at the minute.

“We know the memories the FA Cup provides with opportunities to create. We also can't shy away from the financial rewards that are now in the competition. Clubs like ourselves need to get what we can in Cups like these, and we will be looking to do that starting next week with Rugby.”
