McNamara | 'We really turned it on today.'

Dan McNamara labelled his Wolves Women’s side as excellent in their emphatic victory over Hull City Ladies.

Wolves netted seven goals to counter Hull’s opener, with goals coming from Beth Merrick, Louanne Worsey, Amy Sims, Amber Hughes and Abi Loydon. McNamara touched on the performance, the display of superb goals, Wythenshaw next up - as well as remembering both Matt Beard and Maddy Cusack.

On remembering both Matt Beard and Maddy Cusack

“Yeah, it's obviously a tough time across the women's game. It reminds us that we never know what people have got going on in the background, we should all be really mindful about everything that people have got on.

“My thoughts are with both Matt and Maddy’s families at a difficult time for them.”

On the performance

“In regards to the performance, I thought we were excellent. After the goal from Hull I thought we really turned it on.

“We’d watched Hull and we'd found those little weaknesses within what they do, and I think we really exploited them today which I was delighted about. The girls are taking on the information and delivering it onto the pitch.

“I did say last week that at some point we are going to turn up and someone will be on the receiving end of it, and I think today we've seen that. Real quality in and around the box, some great moments from individuals, but overall a real collective team effort.

“With a standout performance from Katie Johnson, I thought she was absolutely magnificent today. We knew it would be a battle up here, we knew you have to come here and win first and second contacts in the centre of the pitch before you can do any kind of tactical football, and I thought Katie did that brilliantly, so really proud of her and her performance.”

On the superb seven goals

“They were really good team goals as well. On those set pieces we knew there was an area to be exploited as long as you win the first contact and Beth did that twice in the first half and put us in a good position going into half-time.

“Beth Merrick has absolute quality, she oozes quality, she made the third goal and was involved in a few more, as I said she's brilliant. I thought she had a real standout performance alongside Katie.

“It’s brilliant to see the goals coming from [different places], Amber’s [Hughes] back on the scoresheet, you've seen the reaction of Abi Loydon getting on the scoresheet, you can see what she means to the group.

“I was delighted for Abi, that's her first league goal of the season and she's a really popular character in the dressing room, so the girls are obviously delighted with that. Overall, really good performance with all three points.”

On the trip to Wythenshawe

“We’ll be having a look this week, seeing where the girls are with players coming back from injury. I mentioned on Friday that Anna Morphet is back running now, so that's a real positive.

“We’ve seen Anna Grey getting there, Chloe Williams is nearly ready to go. It's important we get everyone ready for the next run of league games, we can try and split it up, we've obviously played the first bank of games, we did well in them.

“Now we've played these second two and get a break from the league in the league cup. But we've got to be ready for that Stoke game, that is a massive game, the week after next in the league.

“But we also dont want to disrespect Wythenshawe, so we’ll put a team out that is required to do the job next Sunday, but as I said this is a good thing for us to keep the train moving, it breeds confidence. So we’ll be wanting to add another win next weekend.”
