Dan McNamara has described Sunday’s performance at Derby County as one with ‘lots of guts’ as Wolves Women came from behind to take all three points.
Despite going a goal down after just five minutes, the Old Gold rallied and goals from Anna Morphet and Katie Johnson secured all three points on the road. Late drama also saw two red cards and skipper Morphet being given her marching orders, but McNamara has praised his team for finding a way to win on the road.
On winning a different way
“This is always a tough place to come. Derby are set up well, they're well coached. I've got a lot of respect for Sam (Griffiths), and it was tough.
“We knew it was going to be tough, but once again, I think we've got to be better in front of goal.
“We've had numerous chances. We've had a penalty that we've hit over, and I don't think it's as frantic at the end if we do take some of those chances.
“I think we've brought it on ourselves a little bit. Obviously, losing the captain in the last minute and heading into next weekend isn't ideal, but it's three points on the board.
“It's a different kind of performance. I think it was a courageous performance, which had lots of guts in it, so I'm proud of the players.”
On going behind early on
“That can't be good for any team, but it proved that the girls had something to fight back for, and obviously got the two goals in quick succession.
“The dressing room is full of characters. They’ve got a lot of character between them, and it didn't set them back.
“It was a mistake, but they worked well and worked themselves back into the game.”
On a couple of individual performances
“I thought Beth Roberts was excellent today, delivering endless amounts of crosses into the box. I thought Josie Smith did fantastically well, starting her first game for the club.
“As I said, it was tough. It was tough to get through some of those moments but if you want to be a good team at the top of the league and fight and compete, then you have to come to these places and put on performances like we did.
“It lacked quality but showed the right values and the right character to get through what was a difficult 45 minutes.”
On hosting Stoke in the cup on Wednesday
“Wednesday we’ll rotate. Some girls are probably disappointed they didn't get on the pitch today. It was just one of those, really. It was a chess game.
“Whatever Sam did, we had to counteract because I think they had probably the better second half.
“There's a lot of quality on the bench, and they probably deserve an opportunity on Wednesday, and that will certainly come.
“It's a cup game that we want to do well in however, with Forest just around the corner, it will certainly be one we've got our eye on.”
