Abi Loydon says she has a positive feeling heading into her first campaign as a Wolves Women player.
The midfielder was the club’s first signing of the summer after making the switch from West Bromwich Albion, and already feels she is improving under the coaching of Dan McNamara. The Old Gold’s preparations for 2024/25 continued with a 5-2 victory at Cheltenham Town on Sunday and Loydon admits she is enjoying playing alongside, rather than against, the likes of Summer Holmes and Tammi George in midfield.
On beating Cheltenham
“It’s really positive. We’re getting close to the season and you’re getting those connections with different teammates.
“I thought we looked really strong first half and dominated the ball. I just feel like we need to make the most of our chances, especially second half. Overall, it’s positive.”
On different goal scorers
“It’s good for us. It was Abbi’s (Jenner) first start and for her to get two goals, it’s good that we get different goal scorers.
“It shows the quality we’ve got through the team so that’s good.”
On her first few weeks at the club
“I’ve loved it. I feel like I came here for a new challenge having tested myself against some of the best players in the league.
“Macca is a great coach and I’m already improving under him and I can’t wait for the season to get going.”
On her experience at a young age
“Even though I’m quite young, I’ve been in Tier 3 for three years and I know the league. I just want to use that experience in the team as much as I can.
“I’m still learning and I feel like, from the players we’ve got already, I’m just going to learn even more. The likes of Amber Hughes and Tammi George, they’re quality so I want to learn off them.”
On playing in midfield with Summer Holmes and Tammi George
“Summer is always a hard one to play against and even Tammi when I used to play against her for West Brom.
“It’s good to get those connections and learning off them – Summer with the composure and as a player I like to get after players. I feel like Tammi is one of the players I look up to in terms of that.”
On playing at home for the first time on Sunday
“I can’t wait. Wolves have got a great fan base and always down at Telford there’s hundreds, so I can’t wait to get down there and hopefully put on a great performance.”
On her aims for the season
“Individually, I want to get as much game time as I can, become a regular starter and impress people.
“As a team, we want to push on. It’s going to be a hard season this year with the great teams and players coming through.
“We want to believe in ourselves and obviously the end goal is to get promotion.”
