Roberts | 'I can’t fault the resilience'

Beth Roberts has hailed the resilience of the team which saw Wolves Women come from two goals behind before winning on penalties against West Bromwich Albion.

Dan McNamara’s side progressed into the final of the Birmingham Challenge Cup for the third successive season and left-back Roberts has given praise to shootout hero Bec Thomas who saved two penalties, while offering her thoughts on reaching the final and the week ahead.

On getting through the tie

“It’s amazing. I can’t really put into words how that game felt – it was so many emotions right from kick-off.

“I think we’ll all agree that we didn’t start the way we wanted to and it was very poor from our point of view to concede those two goals early on.

“I can’t fault the resilience that the girls showed to get us back in the game, to keep pushing right to the end.

“We were really unlucky not to score a winner with the chances that we had. Onto the penalty shootout – Thommo (Bec Thomas) was an absolute hero and she certainly bailed us out there.

“The girls scoring all the penalties as well was great heart and courage shown by everyone.”

On progressing into the final

“I can’t wait (for the final). A win against Baggies is that extra bit special to any other win and nine on the bounce just shows how much everyone is fighting for this badge and this club, especially in derby games like this.

“I can’t wait for the final and I’m sure we’ll show as much fight, resilience and effort and it will be a really good game to watch.”

On the week ahead

“We’ve got so much depth on the bench so if any changes do happen, we’ve got players who are more than ready to come in.

“We’ll just prepare as we always do. The fitness levels are really good from the girls, so I’m sure we’ll make another good account of ourselves throughout the week.”
