Merrick | 'We’ll be ready for Brighton'

Beth Merrick has every faith that Wolves Women will respond from Sunday’s defeat at Newcastle United.

The midfielder has given credit to the Magpies for their clinical edge, but suggests that things could’ve been different if the Old Gold had taken chances of their own. Merrick believes it’s important to assess performances, both as a team and individually, but insists that the group will be ready for the Adobe Women’s FA Cup test against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

On being beaten by Newcastle

“Fair play to them, I thought they were really good for the full 90. It’s easy to sit here and say the score doesn’t reflect the game, but we’ll take the 3-0, go in on Tuesday, analyse everything.

“We’ll pick ourselves up. We’ve had a great couple of years of doing that. We’re in a bit of a tough moment and we’ve got the best group of girls to be able to get ourselves out of it. I’ve got every faith that we will.”

On having chances

“It was tough conditions, but it was tough for both teams. The major difference is that they were clinical and we weren’t on the day.

“We had chances to be able to change the game and if we take our chance and go 1-1, it’s a very different game.

“I think we let the game sail away from us a little bit and ultimately that’s what cost us the 3-0.

“We’ll get in on Tuesday, we’ll do all the right things. We’ll have a great prep week going into Brighton and we’ll really look to kick-start again and keep lifting ourselves off the floor."

On games coming up

“We’ve got two fantastic games that are coming up and once this is settled and we’ve analysed everything and we look at ourselves and what the team’s done, we’ll definitely go again for Brighton.

“I’m sure we’ll absolutely look forward to that. Right now, we’ll dissect this on the way home, take accountability for whatever we’ve done, looking at myself as well throughout that game and we’ll go again on Tuesday.

“We’ll be ready for Brighton, I’ve got every faith in the group, the squad and all of the staff. We’ll be absolutely in an amazing place for Brighton.”
