Women's preview | Newcastle vs Wolves

Wolves Women travel to league leaders Newcastle United in the FA Women’s National League on Sunday.

The Magpies have lost just one game all season and sit top of the Northern Premier Division table on 31 points.

However, Becky Langley’s side were beaten in their last league outing when Nottingham Forest took all three points from Kingston Park on 21st January with a 2-1 victory.

Wolves are yet to win in the league in 2024 having picked up one point from home games against Burnley and Stoke City.

The Old Gold are keen to find some kind of consistency having been successful in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at Championship outfit Reading.

Newcastle’s ranks include former Wolves defender Naomi Bedeau who joined in the summer, while the Magpies have also recruited Paige Bailey-Gayle and Lia Cataldo on loan from Crystal Palace Women this week.

Wolves were emphatic winners on their last trip to Newcastle, a 5-1 victory in the FA Cup in December 2022 as goals from Beth Merrick (2), Anna Morphet, Tammi George and Maz Gauntlett secured third round progression.

WHAT THE GAFFER SAID

“It doesn’t come any tougher than that. They’re flying at the top of the league but you want to be playing against the best teams.

“We’re going to find ourselves playing against two of the best teams we possibly could over the next few weeks.

“Any away game is always tough, especially when you’re on the kind of wave that Newcastle are. It’s going to be tough going up there, they’re a full-time outfit so straight away you’re thinking how we’re going to manage the occasion, the physicality and everything that comes with that.

“We’ll go up there trying to put right what happened on Sunday. The girls are disappointed in what people saw from them and there’s no better way for them to bounce back against the best team in tier three as it stands at the minute. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
