Women's FA Cup report | Wolves 7-0 Peterborough

Wolves 7 (Hughes 2, 10, 83, George 4, Roberts 45+1, Bramford 61, Johnson 66) Peterborough United 0

Wolves Women were in seventh heaven as an emphatic 7-0 win over Peterborough United booked their place in the third round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at the New Bucks Head.

A hat-trick from Amber Hughes and goals from Tammi George, Beth Roberts, Sophie Bramford and Katie Johnson made sure the Old Gold sealed their place in the hat.

A trio of goals came in a lightning opening 10 minutes, with Hughes breaking the deadlock within the opening two.

The forward picked the pocket of a Posh defender and went one-on-one with the on-rushing Neive Corry before going around the goalkeeper and slotting home.

Two minutes later, George doubled the lead with an excellent finish after receiving a low-driven cross to the far side of the box before unleashing a curling effort into the top corner.

Hughes got her brace six minutes later after winning the ball in the middle of the park. Corry rushed out to apply the pressure on the forward but, from 20 yards out, Hughes found the back of the net of an open goal.

Anna Morphet then picked the ball up in the middle of the pitch just before the 20-minute mark and tried her luck from distance, but Corry was equal to the opportunity and parried out.

Fankie Pim sent Poppie Brown through on goal just past the half-hour mark for Peterborough’s first clear-cut chance, but Bec Thomas was equal to the shot from inside the box.

Six minutes before half-time, Dan McNamara was forced to look to the bench after Beth Merrick picked up an injury. Lexie Harrison entered the fray in her place, which meant the youngster made her first appearance in Old Gold.

Just before the break, Wolves were four to the good through Roberts. The defender unleashed a fantastic strike from just inside the area, which rippled into the top corner.

Half-time | Wolves 4-0 Peterborough United

It was the Old Gold again with the first opportunity after the break, with Hughes hunting down her hat-trick. The forward fired a shot goalward from close range, but a Peterborough defender remarkably cleared the ball off the line.

Just past the hour mark, Bramford made it five in sensational fashion. The midfielder received a short pass from the byline and backheeled it to get the ball onto her preferred foot before releasing a low, hard curling strike that found the bottom far corner.

The Old Gold’s sixth came in the 66th minute through Johnson, who unleashed an effort from inside the box.The move originated from a Morphet corner, with the ball getting sent to the edge of the box before the defender found herself in a position to shoot inside the area, and the deflected effort rippled into the back of the net.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Wolves got their final goal through Hughes to seal her hat-trick. Liv Fergusson was the architect after driving a shot from distance into the palms of Corry, which she could only parry away as far as Hughes. The hat-trick hero was lurking at the back post to knock the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net to secure Wolves’ place in the hat for the third round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
