McNamara | 'The fans can have the bragging rights again'

Dan McNamara has praised the patience and experience within his group as Wolves Women recorded their eighth straight Black Country derby victory on the weekend.

Sophie Bramford, Liv Fergusson and Tammi George scored the goals as the Old Gold defeated West Bromwich Albion, despite Delphi Cole reducing the deficit early in the second half. Manager McNamara has highlighted a number of aspects of the performance as Wolves continued their dominance in the derby to maintain the bragging rights.

On derby day victory

“It’s brilliant. We always talk about what this means not just to the players, but to the fans who travel here week in week out, the families of the players and the whole city.

“It’s brilliant to not only win today but to hold the record we do over the last few seasons – it’s remarkable.

“Credit to the girls, I thought they were fantastic. It was made really difficult in the first half by a resilient Albion side.”

On being patient

“I don’t think they’ve really threatened going forward but they were hard to break down. We talked about just being patient and moving the ball – eventually moments of quality will crop up.

“There were some stand-out performances and I’m delighted to be going home with the three points and the fans can have the bragging rights again.”

On showing experience

“We talked about it at half-time and I don’t feel they were really threatening us. It was only going to be a mistake that let them back in, which it turned out to be.

“In that 10-15 minute period you’ve got to show some real character and show a bit of resilience ourselves – I thought we did.

“I thought the real experienced players in the group – Destiney (Toussaint) and Merrick Will got on the ball, slowed the pace of the game down and played forward when we needed to.”

On Forest up next

“It's one at a time. There have been a couple of games called off today so it’s always nice to get points in the bag.

“This league this year is so tough, it’s so tough. We’ve just got to keep plodding away.

“It’s an away game at Forest so first and foremost we’ll prepare as we normally do. It was a difficult game up there two or three weeks ago, so it’s not going to be easy.

“We’ll put the trust in the girls, put the game plan together and go up there full of confidence.”
