Dan McNamara was disappointed his side didn’t win by a clearer margin, despite progressing into the second round of the Women’s Challenge Cup.
Wolves Women defeated Sutton Coldfield Town by one goal to nil thanks to Anna Morphet’s penalty, but the manager felt the Old Gold created more than enough chances to score plenty more goals. McNamara has also spoken on the form of Morphet before previewing next weekend’s first Black County derby of the season at West Brom.
On the victory
“All of those chances and we go through on a penalty, so ultimately it wasn't good enough. We can pass it off as one of those games again or we can actually dig into it and have a look at it this week and find out why after 44 chances on goal, we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Overall, we’re disappointed, I think that disappointment rings around the whole staff and players.
“Credit to Sutton, they battled, they worked very hard when they went down to 10, they were tenacious and stuck to their game plan. They very rarely got out of their half which is part of their game plan, they’re very good in those transitional moments.
“But as I said, we can’t create 44 good chances, and a lot of those were clear-cut chances that we’ve got to score, and not put them in the back of the net. Through to the next round of course, but we’ve got to go away and probably be a little bit disappointed with the performance.”
On Anna Morphet’s display
“Anna Morphet has come a long way over the last couple of years, she’s a fantastic leader on the pitch and when you give her those opportunities in front of goal, she usually scores.
“She’s got a brilliant execution with what she does, so delighted for Anna, another goal to add to her tally, but again, it shouldn’t come down to that. I think that the 44 minutes that came before the penalty, we created numerous chances to go ahead and we didn’t take them. And in the 45 minutes in the second half, we should kill the game off.
“The positive is that we are through but there’s a bit of ill feeling towards the fact that we couldn’t score from open play today.”
On West Brom next weekend
“They’re all tough, but we all know that this is the one that means a lot to everyone associated with Wolves.
“We are on a great run in regard to results against Albion but I think they are a different animal this year. I think that the players they’ve brought in are great players so we’re going to have to really make sure we’re on it next week. As I said they’ve got some great new players and really good staff. They’ve got their ideas and we’re going to need to really be on it next weekend to make sure we go down there and give a good account of ourselves.
“This league is so open this year, you look at the results that have happened today at the top of the table, so in order to achieve our goals over the next few years, these are the types of fixtures that you need to find a way to get through, whether that’s performance wise or whether that’s through a penalty to take you through or a last-minute winner.
“We’ll focus this week, the girls will be disappointed with themselves today, but come Tuesday they’ll be back on it and we’ll be ready to go in the first Black Country derby of the season.”
