McNamara | 'Liv shows the direction of the football club'

Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara has described incoming addition Liv Fergusson as a player with ‘huge pedigree’ and ‘the right person’ for the club.

The signing marks the first of the summer for McNamara, who believes Wolves have made a statement of intent by securing the signature of Fergusson following her departure at Celtic. With experience in the Women’s Super League and Championship, the 28-year-old brings the perfect blend of quality and experience and by adding another Wolves fan to his pack, McNamara knows that Fergusson will be well aware of the meaning behind pulling on an Old Gold shirt.

On Fergusson’s signing

“We’re delighted with this signing. Liv shows the direction the football club still wants to go in and she’s a really good capture for us.

“She’s had a lot of offers so for us to get her over the line is really good news for us. I could tell within 10 minutes of meeting her what kind of character she was and she’s definitely the right person we want to get in at Wolves.

“I’m delighted to get her over the line and looking forward to seeing her play in Old Gold.”

On her previous experience

“You can see the previous clubs she’s played at. She’s played at Bristol and Celtic more recently, so she’s got a huge pedigree.

“She’s an outstanding signing for the football club and it shows the direction the football club are still trying to go in.

“We want to add little bits of quality like Olivia and hopefully we can continue to drive forward and ultimately go for what we want to achieve next year.”

On her qualities as a player

“I think she’s got a bit of everything when we’re talking about attacking players. We’ve got a really strong frontline as it is, but we felt we needed to add a little bit more quality in there.

“She’s quick, direct, will go at players and can score goals. We’re really excited and what attracted me most was the person behind the player – that’s often what we look for here at Wolves.

“It’s a really tight-knit group that we’ve got and trying to find the right mould of person is just as important as trying to get the right player.

“One of the early statements that Liv made was “I want to be part of the team that gets us to the Championship, not just be part of the team that plays in the Championship” and I was sold at that. It shows what sort of person she is.”

On being a Wolves fan

“There’s a few of them in that squad now. You’ve seen what it means to a few of them – Anna Price and Beth Merrick being two of.

“They know what the club’s about. It’s a working class club where you come here and they’ll understand what the fans think it means to play for Wolves.

“That’s going to add to it. I’m sure it was a driver in her decision to commit to Wolves. She’s looking forward to seeing her name on the back of an Old Gold shirt, so it’s really exciting to have her in.

“She’ll know the values of the football club and I’m sure she’ll drive us forward and be a huge signing for us.”
