Wolves were looking to build on last week's win over Radcliffe Olympic and scored with their first chance of the game in the 11th minute after a free kick on the right by Jen Anslow was misjudged by the keeper and went into the net.
They could have had a second just four minutes later after Jade Cross and Anslow combined well on the left, but Anslow's cross was just too high for Hattie James.
Then a through ball to Amber Quick caught Long Eaton on the counter, but her left footed shot was saved low down by the keeper.
Wolves then had a flurry of chances, with Jodie Bragan, Jade Cross and Natalie Widdal all coming close within the space of 10 minutes, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
In the 30th minute a misjudged pass in the Wolves back line nearly let in Laura Sears for Long Eaton, but her touch was too strong and Gardner gathered.
Anslow almost made it 2 in the 40th minute with an in-swinging corner which hit the bar, so it remained 1-0 to Wolves at the break.
Wolves' search for a second goal continued and in the 52nd minute it was Quick's turn to send in a low cross from the right, but Jade Cross's shot was well saved.
In the 62nd minute Anslow sent in a high inviting corner ball, but Natalie Widdal's looping header hit the top of the bar.
Despite their pressure, that elusive second goal never came for Wolves, but they kept a clean sheet and secured the all-important 3 points.
Manager Tim Dudding said: "Credit to the players on their performance; a determined effort that secured the points.
"We displayed the necessary characteristics to see the game through, but are aware of the adaptations needed to improve our game.
"We need to look to take our chances as and when they arise to achieve results that justify our endeavour! We go again".
The teams won't have long to wait for the reverse fixture as they meet again next Sunday away at Long Eaton. Then Wolves have two home games in quick succession. On Sunday 23rd April they entertain Rotherham United at 2pm, before a top of the table clash under floodlights against league-leaders Loughborough Foxes at 8pm on Wednesday 26th April. Both games will be played at Hednesford Town FC. Admission is £2; concessions £1.
