A last-minute goal saw Wolves Women fall to a 4-3 defeat in a seven-goal thriller against Leicester City Women at Hednesford Town.
Despite early pressure from Wolves, it was Leicester who went ahead with an early goal in the sixth minute after a cross was deflected into the path of Leigh Dugmore who slotted it past Sophie Glenny in the Wolves goal.
Wolves responded in the 14th minute after a corner by Courtney Jones found captain Anna Price, pictured, who headed home into the top corner to level the score.
The game was end-to-end with chances for both sides, and Leicester had the ball in the net again but the goal was disallowed.
There was no mistake this time as Leicester retook the lead in the 36th minute after Brown headed in from a free kick.
The game continued to ebb and flow, but Wolves went into the break 2-1 down.
Manager Tim Dudding made some changes early in the second half, with Hakeman and Jones making way for McQuilkin and Bavington.
Leicester created a host of chances, but were denied by some excellent goalkeeping from Glenny in the Wolves goal.
They eventually found their way through though, with a shot from Mitcham giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.
Wolves responded straight away and got their second goal just a minute later as Jade Cross found Leanne Robinson on the edge of the box. She chipped the keeper to get Wolves back into the game.
Wolves now pressed on for the equaliser as Dudding brought on fresh legs in Jodie Bragan. Wolves were looking dangerous from set pieces, with Jen Anslow and Price both going close.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 87th minute as Jade Cross’s effort beat the keeper to make it 3-3 as the final whistle approached.
But the point was snatched away in the 89th minute as Axten’s long distance shot looped over Glenny to give the visitors the win.
Assistant Manager Tom Davies said: “It’s a disappointing result after some great play. I thought we won a lot of individual battles and played how we wanted to play, and that in turn created chances and we took those chances. We had opportunities from outside the box, put crosses into the box and we scored goals so that’s a big positive.
“We’ll take that into next week’s game and we know we are ready for that next challenge.”
