U21 Report | Wolves 1-1 West Ham

Wolves 1 (Chirewa 24) - 1 (Adiele 58) West Ham

Wolves under-21s were forced to settle for a draw against West Ham in the Premier League 2 on Monday evening.

Tawanda Chirewa’s strike midway through the first half proved to be the turning point for Wolves before Emeka Adiele got the hosts level in the second half.

Lewys Benjamin proved some fantastic goalkeeping when it was needed, the Wolves number one denying Callum Marshall’s penalty in additional time.

A remarkable save from Benjamin denied Josh Alaja in the opening ten minutes, laying the foundations for what would come in the closing minutes of the game.

Wolves had to be patient when creating attacking chances, the visitors had queues of claret and blue defending their area when the Old Gold side had the ball.

That persistence eventually paid off when Chirewa’s fantastic finish on the 24th minute gave the Old Gold the lead with his strike finding the top corner.

Momentum was in full favour of the home side and Chirewa was searching for his second goal of the evening after the restart, which was denied by the West Ham defence.

Despite Wolves’ attacking pressure, Emeka Adiele got the Hammers on level terms briefly before the hour mark.

Substitute Fletcher Holman presented Ethan Sutherland with a vital chance to regain Wolves’ advantage, but the number 11 failed to find the target from close range.

Holman’s individual brilliance created two opportunities for the forward; his first effort was tipped onto the bar by a fully stretched Krisztián Hegyi before his flicked header narrowly glanced past the post.

Benjamin provided a crucial save in the final moments to deny Callum Marshall’s effort from the penalty spot and did enough for James Collins’ side - lead by Lead Coach Ian Sharps on the night - to earn a point.
