U21 Report | Wolves 2-4 Swansea City

Wolves 2 (Holman 24’, Sutherland 82’) 4 Swansea (Griffith 3’, Woodward 65’, McKenzie 78’, Wales 80’)

Wolves under-21s fell to defeat against Swansea City in the Premier League Cup on Monday evening.

An early strike from Yori Griffith gave the visitors the lead before Fletcher Holman’s timely finish in the 24th minute.

However, Thomas Woodward’s second-half header regained Swansea’s lead before Blair McKenzie and Bobby Wales also found the net.

Ethan Sutherland reduced the deficit for the Old Gold, but it proved to be a consolation goal for James Collins’ side.

Resilience proved to be pivotal for Wolves, after they found themselves behind in the early exchanges, and Holman had the answer for the home side.

Enso Gonzolez’s effort was parried by Evan Anderson into the space of Holman, who tapped the ball into an unguarded net.

Wolves were thriving and Tawanda Chirewa’s intelligent movement created him an opportunity on goal from range, from a difficult angle on the left-hand side his strike struck the crossbar.

McKenzie Bradbury’s effort forced Anderson into an excellent save from point-blank range and Wolves were knocking on the door for a second goal.

Alfie Pond displayed his worth as the Welsh side continued to build momentum going forward.

Despite Wolves’ defensive determination, Woodward's flicked header regained Swansea’s lead in the 65th minute.

Brookes did well to deny the visitors a third goal four minutes later, saving Pescatore’s effort from close-range with his outstretched leg.

Chirewa created a further two opportunities to reduce the deficit but failed to hit the target on either effort.

McKenzie’s timely finish in the 78th minute gave the Swans a cushion and created an uphill task for Wolves, with time ticking on.

Wales’ finish into the bottom corner rounded off a night that the young side will want to forget.

Despite the quick turnaround Wolves showed resilience and searched for a way back after Sutherland’s curled set piece strike reduced the deficit, but time had run out for Collins’ team.
