Lewys Benjamin was ‘proud’ of his performance as the goalkeeper made a number of impressive saves after being introduced early into Wednesday evening’s International Cup game against Hertha Berlin.
The 17-year-old came on inside 10 minutes at the New Bucks Head following Jimmy Storer’s straight red card as the Old Gold were made to defend their goalless draw for the majority of proceedings. Benjamin was in fine form and pulled off one save in particular, clawing the ball off the goal line to prevent what looked like a certain goal. The youngster has spoken about his early introduction and the defensive solidity in front of him which saw Wolves under-21s through to the knockout stages for the first time.
On coming on early into the game
“At first I was a bit nervous because coming on after five minutes isn’t easy in a game like that.
“The boys stuck at it well. We all chipped in, did our jobs and got the result.”
On his performance and saves
“I felt like it was my time to express myself and show what I could really do and how I can help the team.
“Getting on the pitch was a bit of a relief for me to get my chance.
“I’m quite proud of them (his saves). I know I can do it so I’ve got to keep working and stick to that.”

On defensive solidity
“We communicated really well throughout the game and stuck together massively. Everyone who came on chipped in and they blocked everything. They kept us so safe at the back so big praise to them.
“It’s very tough for us because we’re a man down and we’ve got to sit in. I think we did a great job of it because we all stuck together and showed great courage to hold them out for that long.”
On the knockout stages
“All the boys are excited for who’s next. It gives us a massive opportunity to do something in the future.
“It’s something that we’ve never done so it’s going to be a great opportunity.”
