Wolves 0 Charlton Athletic 2 (Bower 35, Casey 51)
Charlton Athletic scored a goal in each half to condemn Wolves under-21s to a defeat in the Premier League Cup at Aggborough.
Toby Bower and Pat Casey were on target for the Addicks on Sunday afternoon, leaving James Collins’ side still awaiting their first win of the group stage.
Wolves were dealt an early blow when Harry Birtwistle went down with a muscle injury just a couple of minutes into the game, with Temple Ojinnaka replacing the right-back.
The visitors were first to have a sighter at goal and Jimmy Storer had to be at his best to save Bower’s free-kick that was heading into the corner.
And Bower came close shortly after when he latched onto Tolu Ladapo’s cut back and only just skewed a right-footed effort wide of the mark.
However, Bower wasn’t to be denied for a third time when he gave the visitors the lead 10 minutes before the half-time interval. A Henry Rylah cross was headed away by Kam Kandola but straight to the boot of Bower who met the ball on the volley and found the bottom corner with a low drive across goal.
In added time of the first half, Storer was forced into a second diving save as Rylah volleyed towards the top right corner but was denied by the gloves of the stopper.
Half-time | Wolves 0-1 Charlton
The Addicks doubled their advantage six minutes into the second period as Casey took down Rylah’s ball into the box and with his second touch, he clinically fired across Storer to make it two.
Storer did well to prevent a third when Jason Adigun had not one but two attempts in quick succession, the first effort looking to be curling into the bottom corner before the man in between the Wolves sticks got down to palm around the post.
Wolves searched for a way back into the game but clear cut chances were limited against a well-drilled Charlton side. Marvin Kaleta ventured forward with a strong run into the opposition penalty area, before Tawanda Chirewa fired just over the top of the bar from the edge.
The Old Gold were superbly denied a late route back into the game by goalkeeper Prince Adegoke as a wild swipe at the ball from a Charlton defender led to the ball looking to be creeping into the corner, before Adegoke scrambled across to save on the line.
Full-time | Wolves 0-2 Charlton
