EFL Trophy report | Lincoln 2-0 Wolves

Lincoln City 2 (Adelakun 19, Makama 90+3) Wolves 0

Goals from Hakeeb Adelakun and substitute Jovon Makama gave Lincoln City all three points in the EFL Trophy against Wolves under-21s.

The youngsters gave it a good effort but were beaten by the League One outfit, despite a heroic performance from Joe Young in goal who made a number of superb saves.

The home side, managed by former player and coach Mark Kennedy, had a glorious chance to take an early lead when a long throw was flicked on, but Mide Shodipo headed over at the back post from close range.

The Imps then broke the deadlock on 19 minutes courtesy of Adelakun as he did well to bring down a cross from Jack Burroughs before firing low and beyond Young in the Wolves goal.

James Collins’ side looked to get on the ball themselves as they searched for a leveller, and they came extremely close through Leon Chiwome. Tawanda Chirewa played an inch-perfect ball onto the top which was latched onto by the forward, who beat the goalkeeper to the ball and lobbed it just wide.

Moments later, Owen Farmer tested the gloves of Jordan Wright as he ran onto a loose ball and curled towards the far corner, but Wright was equal to it as he palmed away for a corner.

Wolves did well to avoid going two behind early into the second period when the ball dropped at the feet of Dylan Duffy inside the penalty area, but his shot was deflected just wide of the post much to the relief of the visitors.

And the away side had Young to thank as he denied the Imps a second as he acrobatically saved from Alex Mitchell, before Duffy curled agonisingly over the top.

Wolves brought Ethan McLeod on in place of Chiwome, as Collins changed his number nine with just under 20 minutes to go.

And the substitute almost conjured up an opening when he was played in by Chirewa and after getting the better of his marker, McLeod had time to put a dangerous cross into the box, but it was well-defended by Lincoln.

At the other end, Young was called into action by the boot of Ali Smith after the midfielder let rip from distance and forced the stopper into a diving fingertip save. From the resulting corner, Young again produced heroics as he saved with his feet to ensure the scoreline remained at one.

However, there wasn’t much the goalkeeper could do to eventually prevent Lincoln doubling their lead in added time as substitute Makama was played through one-on-one before calmly slotting into the corner to make certain of the points.
