Fraser scores winner in Bournemouth friendly

Nathan Fraser scored the only goal of the game as Wolves under-21s defeated AFC Bournemouth in a friendly at Compton Park on Monday afternoon.

The striker scored four minutes from time to secure the victory for James Collins’ side, which pleased the head coach who thought it was thoroughly deserved. With a two-week break in between league fixtures, the 90 minutes against the Cherries gave important game-time to those in need of it, while getting more minutes into the legs of everyone else. Collins felt his team dealt well with the windy conditions and suggested that the late goal was a result of the hard work up until that point.

On the game

“The game was mainly for boys who haven’t had a lot of football, that was the initial plan – Mitch (Agboola), Lee Harkin and players like that who need fixtures and needed the game.

“It was a good game to arrange for them and it was a good run-out for some of the others as we haven’t had a game this week.

“I enjoyed the game and the football we played – I thought we played some excellent football today and deserved the win.”

On dealing with the conditions and deserving the win

“It was blowing a gale but if you keep the ball on the floor, the wind affects it less. I thought that’s what we did and we worked our way out of the tight situations very well.

“In the first half we were excellent without creating too many chances and in the second half we created more and had better chances.

“Today served its purpose but it’s always great to win when you deserve to win. We probably had 80% possession in the game and dominated the ball.

“Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve and they nick one or you get a draw. It was nice to get the win at the end.

“We got some chances late on in the game which our football in the first half had earnt us by wearing them down and I thought we wore them down well.”

On Nathan Fraser getting on the scoresheet

“His work ethic is outstanding. Very rarely have I met a centre forward who’s prepared to work as hard for the team as he is.

“He took his goal well, one v one late on in the game. When you haven’t scored too many of late, that can be a nervy one for him but he took the goal very well.”

On the players currently out injured

“They’re progressing well. Alfie’s (Pond) back in training and Harvey’s (Griffiths) a little bit longer, but progressing well.

“Jack Scott’s currently got a bit of a back problem but won’t be far off. We’re trying to get them back for the run-in at the end of the season.”
