U21 preview | Sunderland vs Wolves

Wolves under-21s open their 2023 fixture schedule with a trip to face Sunderland in the Premier League Cup on Thursday afternoon.

The tie will see the two sides go head-to-head in a rearranged clash, after the original fixture back in November was abandoned due to extreme fog.

Sunderland were leading 1-0 at the time the referee called a halt to proceedings, but it was Wolves who took home the points in the reverse fixture.

Dylan Scicluna scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory at the New Bucks Head for the old gold, who have won three and lost just one of their four Group H games.

James Collins’ side require just a point from Thursday’s encounter to secure qualification into the knockout stages of the competition.

Defeat at Reading last time out meant Wolves had to wait to confirm their progression, as they hope to replicate last season’s run of reaching the PL Cup final.

Sunderland sit bottom of the group and are unable to qualify, but the Black Cats did manage a win away to Reading last month and have proved a tough nut to crack in their five group matches.
