Collins | 'We didn't take our chances in the big moments'

Under-21s head coach James Collins conceded that his side were fairly beaten by Manchester City at Compton Park on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors showed a clinical edge to their play, putting three past Wolves after responding well to an early Joe Hodge opener. At the other end, the old gold created more than enough chances in the opposing box to add to their tally of one but were unable to show the same level of efficiency in front of goal as their Manchester rivals.

On the chances at both ends

“We defended reasonably well against a really good team but probably forfeited too many chances to them. You can’t concede three and expect to win games of football, so I was a little bit disappointed with how we defended in those situations.

“I thought we attacked very well at times and created some good chances. We didn’t take the chances in the big moments, and they did.

“Against the really good teams in this division that’s what happens. Games are decided by fine details and fine lines – today, we can say we feel unfortunate, but I think the game went how it should’ve done because they took their chances.

“When you get opportunities against the very best teams in the league you have to take them because they’ll take theirs when they get them.

“They’re good lessons for us. I thought we performed well for the majority of it, and we created lots of good chances.”

On threatening a mean defence

“I’ve watched their games – they’ve only conceded four goals this season. Last season they were the lowest conceding team in the league, and we’ve caused them real problems.

“It’s probably a fair result, I’m just disappointed we didn’t take our chances.

“I actually thought we weren’t very good in the first few minutes. It was a slow start, then we got ourselves into it and the game plan set into motion.

“We knew we were going to have to sit in a little bit and defend, but we thought we’d cause them problems on the counter attack with Tyler (Roberts), Conor (Ronan) and Chem (Campbell) and that’s how it turned out.

“Joe (Hodge) really drives us forward and took his goal very well – we were pleased at that point.”

On the timing of the goals conceded

“I thought the first goal we gave away was really soft and at that point we should’ve held on at 1-0 for a bit longer than we did.

“To come in 2-1 down at half-time was disappointing because I thought the two goals came from our poor defending rather than them opening us up.

“We started the second half very well but then they got the third and it was a hard game from then on.

“Having said that, we still had moments and in thought we should’ve had a penalty which would’ve made the final few minutes interesting.”

On Joe Hodge’s performances this season

“I can’t speak highly enough of Joe. He’s a manager’s dream in the fact that he’s got talent and ability, but also understands that to make it at the top level or any level of professional football you have to do the hard work and the hard yards.

“Nobody I know works harder than him or sticks at it, showing resilience like him. He’s getting his rewards with his performances.

“I think he’s been our standout player this season so far and because of that probably won’t spend much longer in under-21s football. He’ll either get in and around our first team or he’ll get himself a really good loan.”
