As Wolves under-23s returned to Molineux, Chem Campbell was the centre of attention, as he followed an impressive goal with a straight red card, as the Black Country derby with West Bromwich Albion ended all square.
The attacker rose well to head home Jack Hodnett’s corner in front of 3,000 supporters inside Molineux, but the experienced Kenneth Zohore levelled for the visitors, before Campbell saw red for an off the ball incident 16 minutes from time, meaning Wolves were satisfied with their point come full-time.
Determined to savour their return to Molineux after almost two years away, the under-23s wasted little time getting their noses in front. Hodnett was the creator with a beautifully whipped corner and Campbell rose highest to glance into the far corner after just ten minutes.
Wolves’ main threat was coming Owen Hesketh, who produced a pair of mazy runs around the 35 minutes, but a Hodnett volley, sliced well wide, was the best the hosts could muster from it. Albion had the experienced Zohore leading the line, and he was a handful for the Wolves backline, which dealt with him impressively.
Half-time | Wolves 1-0 West Brom
Wolves continued their positivity after the interval and Hesketh stung the palms of Alex Palmer, before Harry Birtwistle fired off target. However, as those chances came and went, the Baggies punished them by using their experience, as Owen Windsor crossed for the towering presence of Zohore, who powered a header between the legs of Louie Moulden.
However, the major talking point of the second period arrived on 73 minutes when Wolves were reduced to ten men. Goal scorer Campbell’s night flipped when he lunged in on a West Brom defender, and although he was set to get away without punishment with the referee unsighted, in the melee which followed, the Wolves man raised a hand and was instantly dismissed.
After that, another fine run from Hesketh nearly bringing a late winner, while James Collins’ men never looked like losing the contest either, as the points were shared at Molineux.
Full-time | Wolves 1-1 West Brom
COMING UP
Collins’ side see their Papa John’s Trophy group stage conclude at Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday. Realistically, Wolves need to beat Crewe and hope Shrewsbury Town can only pick up one point against Wigan Athletic.
