The Irishman broke Magpies hearts when he shot on the turn with just minutes remaining, but he admits he’s been working hard on putting the ball in the back of the net, having spurned opportunities in other games this season.
On an important three points
“It was an important win for the team, because we knew coming up here that it was going to be a tough game. Themselves, Fulham and Villa are all good footballing sides in the league.
“We knew today was going to be tough and thank god we got the result.
“We had to work hard for it. Shelvey was playing in midfield and he didn’t just toss it off, he was unbelievable tonight, to be fair, so we were delighted to get it over the line.”

On a slow start to the game
“James [Collins] on the sideline, he changed the formation half-an-hour in because it wasn’t working for us. When we made the change, it started to go our way. We started to make a few chances and we took them in the second-half.
“It was important to take the chances because we’ve been working on it over the week, just putting balls into the box because we have players who can take the chances. It’s just about creating them and taking them.
“Tonight, thankfully it did pay off.”
On his first league goal of the season
“I’ve been training hard and working on adding goals to my game and over the week we’ve been putting balls into the box and I’ve been getting on to them.
“I’ve got to be in that second six-yard box, picking up second balls, and the linesman said to me at half-time, ‘Keep yourself onside and you’ll get one.’
“Thankfully it went off Hoddy’s [Jack Hodnett] foot tonight and I got on the end of it and tonight it paid off.”

On setting a goal target
“At this stage of the season, in the games running up to Christmas, I’d want maybe another five or six goals to add to the tally, and hopefully after Christmas I can go on a run.”
