Wolves’ place in the season extender was confirmed by results elsewhere last week, but James Collins’ side know three points against the Royals would see them leapfrog Crystal Palace and host the Eagles in the West Midlands in the semi-finals.
Anything less than a win could open the door for Sunderland to gate-crash the play-off party, which would see Wolves meet Stoke City in the semi-finals, so the incentive is there for the under-23s.
As well as play-off rankings, there’s also pride at stake for Wolves, who were heavily beaten by the same opponents 10 days ago, losing 5-0 to the Royals away from home.
That reverse was an outlier in the youngsters’ recent form, after they’d taken seven points from the previous nine available against Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.
The most recent of those fixtures – a 3-0 win over the Canaries – was their last on home soil, and also one of the most complete performances of the campaign, so Collins will use that as the benchmark when rallying his team for one final time in the regular season.
