Wolves under-21's 2019/20 Leasing.com Trophy campaign came to a close on Tuesday night as the young side fell to a 3-0 defeat away at Salford City in the Round of 32.
Two goals from Luke Armstrong and one from Richie Towell sealed the Sky Bet League Two side's place in the last 16 of the competition.
With nothing to separate the sides in the opening 15 minutes of the contest, Wolves had the best opportunity to take the lead through the first big chance of the game. Jordan Graham's low cross broke to the feet of Chem Campbell, ten yards out from goal, but the young forward was dispossessed just before he could get a shot away.
With just under 30 minutes on the clock, Elliot Watt almost produced one of his trademark set-pieces, but although his 30-yard free-kick beat the wall, it was well held on to by Salford keeper Kyle Letheren.
Moments before half-time Salford took the lead when Armstrong pounced on a loose ball in the Wolves box and fired home from close range, leaving Andreas Sondergaard beaten.
The second-half began how the first 45 minutes ended for Wolves, with Salford striker Armstrong once again getting a goal to double his side's advantage.
Caretaker head coach Mark Kennedy rang the changes mid-way through the second-half in an effort to get back into the tie, but with three minutes of the match remaining, the development side's fate was sealed as Towell made it three to Salford with a stunning strike from the edge of the Wolves penalty area.
The final whistle saw Wolves under-21s fall out of the competition after a valiant effort from the Academy side, but attention will quickly turn to Monday night's Premier League 2 clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at New Bucks Head.
