The under-23 midfielder agreed fresh terms with the club recently and has set his sights on developing further with help of the top-level coaching at Compton Park. Watt made his first-team debut against Sheffield Wednesday last season and is determined to kick-on this term, with peace of mind that his future is secured.
On securing his future
“It feels great. Everybody knows where the club’s going and the direction it’s heading, so for the hierarchy at the club to feel I’m worthy of a new contract, it gives you great confidence that they believe in you.
“Hopefully now I can have a great season, whether it’s here at Wolves or on loan. I just need to kick-on and show what I’m capable of doing.”
On the club’s success
“I think the success with the under-23s comes from the first-team. We mirror how they work and a lot of the lads train with the first-team on a daily basis, we know the shape inside out, so we take what we learn with the first-team to the under-23s.
“Last year, when I made my debut was great and I took what I learnt there into the under-23s and it’s the same for the rest of the lads.”
On his ambitions
“Every lads’ dream is to play for the club in the Premier League and in the Europa League. You also need to be realistic at the same time, look at the calibre of players you’ve got ahead of me, I’ve got Moutinho, Neves, Dendoncker – world class players, so I need to be realistic.
“I’ve got to keep my feet on the ground, I’ve got a new deal which is great, but I’ve got to keep grounded, keep working hard every day and see where it takes me.”
On the step up in division
“Everton had quite a senior squad when we played them, a lad in midfield had played several Premier League games and Cuco Martina playing at right-back, who has played numerous amounts of Premier League games.
“The opposition is better, no disrespect to the teams we played last year. It’s great for us to test ourselves against these better players to see where we are, and hopefully we can replicate our form from last season and be successful.”
On the message from the staff
“Personally, it’s keep working and see where it takes me. I feel like I’m developing well. I’m maturing a lot on and off the pitch, I’m learning the game more and I’m getting fitter and stronger.
“I feel like I’m developing well and I don’t think there’s a better place to develop than this club at the minute, so I’m really enjoying it.
“As a team, we almost have to replicate what we did last year. The first-team say if you get the performances, more than likely you’re going to get the result. We need to make sure that we’re playing the right way, our way, and see where that takes us.”
