Ennis and John make Doncaster loan switch

Wolves under-23 duo Niall Ennis and Cameron John have joined League One side Doncaster Rovers on a season-long loan.

Striker Ennis, who made his senior Wolves debut in the home FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town last season, and 19-year-old defender John will both spend the 2019/20 season at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Ahead of his move to south Yorkshire, Ennis put pen to paper on a new deal with his boyhood club, which will keep the 20-year-old at Molineux until the summer of 2022. John, who was an unused substitute for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in the Premier League game away at Everton, is already tied to the club until next summer, with an option for a further year.

The pair were both integral members of last season’s under-23 side which secured promotion to Premier League 2 Division 1 – the top flight of youth development football.

Both John and Ennis made 20 appearances each for Rob Edwards’ team in the PL2 during 2018/19, with the latter scoring nine times and making three assists as the side took the Division 2 title.

Scott Sellars, Head of Academy at Wolves, said: “Both boys had really good seasons last year and progressed well in the under-23s, so this move will be good for everyone involved.

“Niall had a few injury problems when he went out on loan in 2017/18, so we felt it would be good for him to stay with us for another year and get back to his old self, while Cam came on leaps and bounds in his development last year, and we all felt that he needed competitive football and some new experiences to help further his career.

“Niall’s new contract is well deserved, and for us it’s important that we look after our boys, look after the talent we have and try to protect it, while giving the players the opportunity to grow and develop.

“There is a life span for all the boys in terms of under-23 football, and eventually they all need to go on and develop in league football. This is why we’re very pleased that Niall and Cam get the opportunity to work with an experienced coach and really good guy in Darren Moore who has worked at academy level and under-23 football so understands the process.”
