Wolves lift Soccer Sevens Shield

Rob Edwards’ Wolves team will return home from Hong Kong with the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens Shield in what was their debut year in the tournament.

Wolves defeated fellow Premier League outfit Leicester City in the final thanks to Niall Ennis’ sudden death strike, meaning captain Ed Francis lifted the shield with his team mates come full-time.

The victory was the ideal way for the youngsters to sign off what has been an incredible season, which peaked when the Premier League 2 Division 2 title was sealed last month.

In Hong Kong on Sunday, they had to overcome the disappointment of being eliminated from the primary cup and rallied to lift the Shield ahead of tough opposition.

After Saturday’s excitement, Wolves’ knockout stage in the primary cup was ultimately short-lived, as Edwards’ men were on the wrong side of a sudden death goal against Kitchee.

Ennis’ smart finish from close range looked to be enough for Wolves to progress with two minutes left, but the Hong Kong opposition fought back to equalise.

The same four men from Saturday's sudden death - Francis, Elliot Watt, Ryan Giles and Ennis - were entrusted with the responsibility, but were out of luck on this occasion as Kitchee progressed.

Defeat meant Wolves turned their attentions to the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens Shield and a semi-final with Portimonense, where they made no mistake this time.

A goal in each half-booked Wolves their place in the Shield final. First, Dion Sanderson got on the end of Giles’ cross at the back post, before Ennis converted from close range to seal victory.

An all Midlands affair with Leicester was the reward for Edwards’ side and Ennis was again the hero, as he’d go on to score the goals to earn the tournament’s top goal scorer accolade.

The striker slotted his side ahead, before the Foxes replied to send Wolves into their third sudden death of the competition.

Sanderson replaced Watt on this occasion and Wolves showed their maturity to keep the ball, before Giles squared for Ennis to tap home the decisive goal.
