Wolves And Shanghai Battle Out Draw At Molineux

Wolves U23 1 (Samuels 35') Shanghai SIPG U21s 1 (Zheng 59')

Wolves U23s and Shanghai SIPG U21s battled out a 1-1 draw on Tuesday afternoon at Molineux.

With the season for both Wolves Under 18s and the Under 23s, a team made up of both squads took on Shanghai SIPG U21 in a friendly fixture at Molineux.

Austin Samuels had put the home side ahead in the 35th minute as he headed home from close range.

After making a number of changes in the second half, Wolves were pegged back as Zhou Zheng's 59th minute effort beat Jackson Smith as he shot from the edge of the box.

Despite both sides having chances to win the game, the score remained level as both sides settled for a draw.

Scott Sellars set up his side in the same formation that the first team play, 3-4-3, with Elliot Watt playing in the middle of a back three with Connor Johnson and Dion Sanderson either side of him.

Shanghai began the game brightly as Zhou Zheng rose highest to head a Changcheng cross just wide of Jackson Smith’s post.

Playing at left wing back, Ryan Giles impressed for Wolves following his lead spell at AFC Telford United. The 18 year old, twice beat his man in the opening stages before seeing his crosses well-claimed by the visiting goalkeeper.

The first shot on target of the game came through Connor Johnson as he met a Pedro Goncalves cross. His goal bound header was saved well by Chen Zhe in the Shanghai goal.

It should have been the visitors that took the lead in the 28th minute. Jackson Smith made a superb save from Zheng, however the ball fell to Mingjie who missed from 10 yards with the goal gaping.

Minutes later, it was Wolves that opened the scoring. The lively Austin Samuels capitalised on a slip in the Shanghai defence. He saw his first effort saved but the ball popped up for him to head Wolves ahead.

Half Time: Wolves 1-0 Shanghai SIPG

Wolves made three changes at the break as Ryan Leak, Niall Ennis and a Trialist were all introduced into the action.

Ryan Leak was forced to be alert immediately as he threw himself in the way of a Zheng effort which looked bound to his the back of the net.

Giles struck a powerful effort at Zhe's goal which the Shanghai ‘keeper did very well to palm over his own crossbar.

Wolves made five more substitutions on the 56th minute and it was then that the visitors equalised. Chen Chunxin raced clear before produced an effort which clattered off the post. The ball then fell to Zhou Zheng who made no mistake with follow-up.

Li Shenyuan was kept busy in the Shanghai goal as he prevented Niall Ennis and Benny Ashley-Seal from scoring with two very good save sin quick succession.
