Scott Sellars was delighted to see Bradley Reid re-hit the goalscoring trail in Monday’s Under-21 game with Swansea City.
Reid has missed a lot of the season after fracturing his fibula against Fulham back in August, having made a prolific start to the campaign.
He has returned to action in recent weeks, and headed home in the first half of the game against Swansea before the visitors equalised after the break.
“I thought Brad was excellent,” said Under-21s coach Sellars.
“He was a real handful on the night, probably our best player, and his work ethic and hold-up play was excellent.
“I am really pleased for him that he got his goal.
“He had proved last year that he can score goals at this level and there were areas we worked on and pushed him on.
“I think he has grown up a lot in the last year and he had started the season really well before his injury.
“He was flying, and we were expecting he would go out on loan fairly quickly.
“Maybe there is still chance for him to go out on loan now before the deadline.
“A few clubs maybe thinking there is a good young striker there – he has had his 90 minutes and if there is a loan that is right for him it might be a good one for him.”
Wolves Under-21s have now drawn five of their last six league games, and also a Birmingham Senior Cup tie in which they then lost on penalties, and Sellars has mixed feelings about the results.
“We have had a few draws now and I guess it varies from week to week whether we are pleased with those results,” he explains.
“At West Brom the glass is half full because you have played with ten men for 30 minutes away at The Hawthorns.
“But then against Swansea you go a goal ahead and want to manage the game and go on and win it and you get pegged back.
“I am just frustrated for the lads that they are not getting the wins because that feeling of coming back into the changing room after a win is the best feeling there is.
“I think at the moment, since we made the changes in selection, the lads who have shown they can do well at Under-18 level are doing it again for the Under-21s.
“We had four Under-18s involved and they are consistently proving they are good players.
“I thought it was a good performance overall and the disappointment again is that we haven’t won the game.
“We had the better chances in the first half and Swansea were stronger in the second but overall I was really pleased.”
Wolves now have just two league fixtures remaining, away at Blackburn on Monday and then at home to Fulham at Molineux on Wednesday, April 13th at Molineux.
But there will be other friendly fixtures arranged as well as a post-season tournament in Germany, and Sellars is also keen to try and help those players who have been told they will not be getting new contracts.
“There is not enough games in this league as I keep saying, and it ends pretty quickly,” adds Sellars.
“We are going back to the tournament in Germany at the end of the season that we took part in last year, and we will get some friendly games in between now and the end of the season.
“So the lads will be here beyond the two league games to play in those games and also keep them supporting the first team if needed as well.
“We also know some of the lads who are not getting contracts are still around.
“Ash (Carter) has got to Tamworth – I went to watch him on Saturday and thought he did really well.
“That is good for him and hopefully helps clubs have a look at him.
“Tendai (Matinyadze) is at Rushall and I will try and watch him play in the next couple of weeks.
“Flatty is staying here and he has playing at Cheltenham who are top of the National League so that is a great one for him.
“I’d like to thank that between now and the end of the loan window a couple more might be able to get out on loan and get some real experience.
“And then we can push more Under-18s up.
“The centre halves Leaky and Connor Johnson look ready and as if they need to play more senior football and so we will be looking to push a few more up.”
