Gomes | 'We have nothing to lose'

Joao Gomes believes Wolves can go to Nottingham Forest and play without fear as the team looks to get back to its best after enduring a difficult Premier League campaign.

The Brazilian midfielder feels the situation Wolves currently find themselves in – bottom of the table with just eight points on the board – means they have nothing to lose for the remainder of the season.

As a person who has had to overcome various difficulties in his life, including suffering from a severe stammer which has led to him recently setting up an institute for children with impairments, Gomes is taking that attitude into his life on the football pitch, where he aims to have a positive end to the season so he can hopefully earn a call-up to his national team for this summer’s World Cup.

On facing Forest on Wednesday

“We have nothing to lose. We can be more dangerous with the ball, or even when we don’t have the ball.

“In this situation we are in, I think we can risk more because we don’t have anything else to lose.”

On being a role model for young people

“It means a lot, not only to myself, but also to everybody who identifies themselves with any type of impairment or impediment.

“It’s something that I can do for society and it’s something that I’m very proud about.”

On World Cup aims

“It would be one of my biggest dreams come true. However, due to our current situation [at Wolves], I am aware it’s a bit harder.

“But I can only keep on giving my best and if the opportunity comes round for me, then I have to be ready.

“But playing for my country at a World Cup would be something that would make me very happy.”

On his favourite Brazil moments

“I won't really talk much about results, but one of my happiest memories was when people in preparation for the World Cup [2014 in Brazil] would go out on the streets and decorate their communities.

“For us, the World Cup was a party of football and a celebration of football, rather than an expectation for another world title. Those are my best memories.”
