Rob Edwards was left disappointed his Wolves side were not able to turn their chances into goals as the Old Gold fell to defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth.
Wolves created several meaningful opportunities against the Cherries at Molineux, having been denied taking an early lead through the offside flag after Mateus Mane headed into the back of the net.
And after their visitors notched twice without reply despite Wolves’ onslaught of Djordje Petrovic’s goal, the head coach was left wondering how his side were not able to pick up a point, but acknowledged his players need to do better in front of goal.
On another defeat at Molineux
“We’re in a results business, so I feel really flat now because I felt we should have taken something from the game. I think everyone could see that. I know at the end there’ll be people that will be angry and disappointed because we’ve lost again.
“But in the cold light of day, when I look at it back, it was a good performance. I thought we started the game really, really well. For the first 20 minutes, I thought we were excellent, really good.
“But then I thought we made a few errors that played into their hands, we gave the ball away in some loose areas and the goal was obviously a real highlight for them and playing the game that they want.”
On a lack of cutting edge in front of goal
“The reaction at halftime was excellent. I felt like I was just looking at that goal for the vast majority of the half and we created a lot of big chances. But we’ve got to be ruthless. We’ve got to take them and then we’d be talking about a very different game.
“Goals change games, and that’s what it’s about. We will continue to try and work really, really hard on how we can create more opportunities and better opportunities. But today we did that.
“Bournemouth are a good team and have just come off the back of a win against Liverpool, and today I felt we looked like the better team. But the result, the score line, is the be all and end all, and they’ve come out with the three points.”
On getting off to a positive start
“I thought we started very well. It was a lot of good football, and then we got what we thought was a goal and it was offside.
“We were thinking, ‘OK, come on, let’s build on that’. But we just then played into their hands, a bit loose a few times, some one touch passes where maybe we could have had a touch and just tried to link it.
“Maybe we could have made two or three more passes, rather than trying to go and score straight away, and that gave them some encouragement, and gave them the chance to press us more, which is what they’re great at, and their first goal was a prime example of that.”
On areas to improve
“There are times where I look and I really like us. But I want us to be more aggressive, I want us to create more chances and I want to be able to dominate the ball, but go somewhere with it as well, not just have it for the sake of it.
“But we are showing more of it – there’s no doubt about that. There’s more bravery there, there’s more cohesion, there’s more connection there, but in the end, that’s got to transmit to creating chances. It did today, but then, ultimately, we’ve got to score goals off the back of that.”
On fighting until the end
“We’re making sure that every day our standards are right, and that's all we can do as a staff, and them keep demanding from the players. But credit to the lads, they are committing to that, they’re committed to themselves and each other and what we’re trying to do.
“But I know this is a results business, so people may just look at the result, or will be frustrated with the result, and I get that, but they are working extremely hard.
“You can see that no one went under, no one gave up, and we really pushed to get back in, and not just to get back in but try to win the game, but it wasn’t to be.”
