Wolves 0 Newcastle United 0
Wolves earned a hard-fought point at Molineux after a goalless draw with Newcastle United extended their unbeaten run to five games.
Rob Edwards’ side impressively continued their recent revival on Sunday afternoon, producing a strong defensive display which saw Wolves record consecutive Premier League clean sheets at home for the first time since May 2023.
Chances fell to Yerson Mosquera and Mateus Mane, both of whom tested Nick Pope with their efforts. However, Wolves failed to show their teeth in front of goal and were ultimately forced to settle for a single point.
Following the previous Saturday’s convincing FA Cup triumph over Shrewsbury Town, Wolves looked to do much of the same and quickly settled into the contest.
The visitors, however, created early opportunities to go ahead. Nick Woltemade glanced Harvey Barnes’ cross wide before later heading over the crossbar after meeting Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.
The opening half-hour - and throughout the 90 minutes - saw defenses firmly on top, with both sides’ well-organised structure providing no way through at either end.
Wolves registered their first attempt on target of the afternoon at the half-hour mark. Santiago Bueno flicked on Mosquera’s long throw into the penalty area, before Mane audaciously tested Pope with an over-head effort.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock heading into the break, with Malick Thiaw’s header causing a scramble in the Wolves penalty area. Moments later, Mosquera’s tame effort rolled into the hands of Pope, before Hugo Bueno cut in from the right side and fired narrowly over.
Half-Time | Wolves 0-0 Newcastle
The restart showed little sign of the game’s complexion changing, with minimal action in either penalty area during the opening 15 minutes of the second half.
Both dugouts turned to their benches on the hour mark. Edwards introduced Jorgen Strand Larsen, fresh from his hat-trick in the previous outing, while Eddie Howe made three changes in response to his side failing to register a shot on target after an hour.
As the final 15 minutes approached, momentum tilted in the visitors’ favour, forcing Wolves to further flex their improved defensive capabilities.
Trippier first had Jose Sa interested, with a curling free-kick finding the side-netting, before the Wolves shot stopper was called into action again, this time to deny Joelinton’s header from close range.
Six minutes of second-half stoppage time were announced, and the clearest chance to find the elusive winner fell to Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian snatched at his effort, sending it wide of the post to the Molineux crowd’s relief.
Wolves expertly saw out the contest, ensuring their disciplined performance was rewarded with another point on the board.
