Rob Edwards is hoping his first few weeks in charge at Wolves has already shown signs of the team creating a new identity which can help them to get back to winning ways.
The Old Gold host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night under the Molineux lights, still searching for that first top flight win of the campaign, but have been boosted by the return of veteran defender Matt Doherty to full training.
Edwards believes there has also been several positive shoots of improvement in the last fortnight, and, despite the narrow defeat to Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, that if the players continue to build on what they have produced, three points will not be far away.
On taking positives from Sunday
“We all wanted the win, so there were real mixed feelings afterwards, but I was really proud of the performance and pleased with a lot of aspects of it. When I reviewed it as well, I had the sort of feelings, so there’s a lot to build on.
“There were more connections there, we had more control – with and without the ball – and without the ball, we were in pretty good control as well. We tried to keep the game where we wanted it, and we were also able to have long spells with the ball as well and carried more of a threat. There were a lot of things that were better from the week previous.
“Just getting one or two calls going our way, but obviously, if he’s offside, he’s offside, but little bits like that. But if we can keep putting ourselves in the right positions and doing the right things, hopefully we’ll take them.”
On injury concerns
“Krejci was out on the grass today, but didn’t train with the group, so I don’t think he’ll be ready for tomorrow, but he was out there doing some running and doing some work with the S and Cs [strength and conditioning coaches] and the physios today, so we’re hoping he’s not far away.
“Doc trained with us today, so we’ll see. We’ll have a look because he’s been out for a little while, so whether he’s right to start right now, he might be in a position where he can be involved in the squad.
“Toti was a bit sore for a couple of days, but he’s been out there training today, so he’s fine, and Joao [Gomes] is ok. He’s good.”
On creating an identity
“They were obviously really flat afterwards, as they would be, losing against a Midlands rival, but being able to have a meeting with them on Monday afternoon, I was able to show them the areas that we need to work on, but also a lot of good things that we showed which we could build on as well.
“We need to become us, and if we do these things consistently, they give us a good chance of getting points and winning games. I can see a belief there. They can see that we’re going the right way, and they all knew and felt that it was a good performance. It wasn’t like I was standing in front of them and lying. I’m not searching for positives, there was a lot there, so it certainly makes my job easier.
“But we owe it to ourselves and to everyone connected to the football club to leave it all out there and give everything every day – no matter what situation we’re in. That is always my message. From minute one to 98, or whatever it is that we that we’re playing to, we leave it all out there.
“Whether we’re two nil up or two nil down, we have to keep fighting right till the end, and we’ve shown that so far in the two games, and we’ve just got to continue to do that, we’ve got to keep that belief, and that’s all we can do.”

On an important game at Molineux this week
“Every game is really important for us now with the position that we’re in. Points are really important. But we’ve got to give ourselves the best chance of doing that, and that’s with the performance.
“That’s the bit we can sort of control a little bit more, so let’s go and work really hard, try and bring the energy and the intensity and the aggression that we brought on Sunday and a lot of the bravery and good bits of play that we had with the ball as well, and there’s something there to build on.”
On testing themselves against Forest
“Since Sean’s gone in, they’ve won half of their games, I think they’ve got four wins from eight, but that’s just what he does. They’re a really organised team, lots of good individuals, and a real clear way of playing, but that’s what Sean Dyche brings.
“He’s really good, and that’s what he’s done everywhere he’s been, so I’m not surprised at all. They’re very clear with what they do, they work extremely hard, and they’ve got loads of good players, so it’s going to be another really difficult game.
“Just because they’re in a bit of a bit of a difficult position, it perhaps doesn’t reflect the talent they’ve got and people might think looking at Forest that it’s an easy game, but it’s not an easy game. But it’s one we’re really looking forwards to because we’re at home, and it represents the next challenge for us to try and overcome.”
On appointing Danny Alcock as goalkeeper coach
“We’re not any closer yet on maybe one more that we’re going to do, but Danny is someone I know having worked with him at the FA and with the national teams. He’s worked at this level before and he’s really good
“I get on well with Danny and I know he’s got a lot of a lot of good qualities, and we’ve seen that already in the few days that he’s been in. He’s a really good addition to the club – first and foremost – but also to me and the staff as well.”
