Toti | 'We cannot hide from it. We cannot run from it'

Toti insists Wolves need to start doing their talking on the pitch if they are to get themselves out of the difficult situation they find themselves in, with just two points from their opening 11 Premier League matches.

The disappointing start to the season has seen a change in head coach over the last few weeks, with Vitor Pereira replaced by Rob Edwards ahead of this weekend’s visit of Crystal Palace to Molineux

And the Old Gold captain believes Edwards is the perfect man to help Wolves get back to winning ways, after explaining the passion and love for the club the head coach has displayed during his first week at Compton Park instilling a renew energy and confidence into the players.

On Edwards’ arrival at Wolves

“To be honest, I don’t think there is a more perfect person to be in this place right now than him. He’s someone that knows the club very well. He’s been here before, he played here, he knows not just the players, but the staff, and everybody knows him around here, and we are very happy to welcome him again here to Wolves.

“There should be a top reception [from the fans] for him. Saturday’s going to be a proud moment for him, because this is a dream job for him, coaching a team that he played for. He’s a local person, he’s from around here, his family is from here, so it’s definitely going to be a special moment for him.

“We can tell from his reaction and everything he’s done with us during the week that is very happy to be here with us. He was in a very good moment in Middlesbrough and they was doing very well in the Championship; he was comfortable there and he didn’t have to leave.

“But the fact that he left and he came to us in the tough moment we are in just shows how much he loves the club, how important the club is to him, how much the city and the fans mean to him. He is going to have a good reception, and he deserves it.”

On what Edwards has brought to the squad

“He’s brought a different energy. He already knows the club, he’s very comfortable with it, and he’s very excited to start the first game. This week of training with him has been very good as well to prepare everything for Saturday.

“He’s been showing us his identity, his way to play, his ideas, and trying to show us different options and solutions to the problems that have been happening, or that can happen in the future, like having a plan A and a plan B, which is important to have, and we are very excited to work with him.

“Since he arrived and what he’s talking about with us, the message has been very clear to everybody and to all the players. We’ve been having a couple of meetings and we just had another one today too, so it’s been good right now, and he’s made some good impressions.”

On the change of manager

“It’s always sad when a gaffer moves on. He [Pereira] came in a bad moment in the last season and he did a great job. We started very well with him and we finished the season well with the way we wanted to finish.

“But, of course, when this season started again, things didn’t go as planned. We tried to work hard during the pre-season with some new ideas that he was trying to implement to us and tell us to do, but things didn’t go well for him.

“But after they left, I spoke with all of them [Vitor and his staff] and I wish them all the best. I respect each one of them and will always be grateful for what they did for us. We had a very bad moment at the end, but we cannot forget that we had some very good moments with them too, and we need to be grateful for those.”

On a difficult season so far

“I’m not going to lie, it has been a rollercoaster since the season started, and even since pre-season. Since the moment the gaffer at the time, Vitor, put me to be the captain, and I said at the time I would accept it, and it will be proud moment from myself and for my family.

“I’m one of the players that has been here for a long time, along with Doc, Jose Sa and other players, and I told him I’d accept the challenge, but it’s been tough. For me, as the captain and one of the leaders in the team, we can never go down and we need to show that we’re never going to give up. There are still more games to come and we still need to prove that we can still do it.

“But not only for the team, but for me personally, this season has been a rollercoaster as well. There was a moment that I was not playing, but football is like this. There are going to be games when you’re not going to play, and you just need to be ready for when you come back and play again.

“Especially when you’re outside [the starting 11], you need to make sure you support who’s playing and make them feel comfortable and ready for the challenge because football is about this. It’s about ups and downs, and every day we work to try to be a better version of ourselves at the training ground, and that’s what we want to keep doing, and me personally as well, I’m going to keep working for that so we can have better moments.”

On doing the taking on the pitch

“It’s not good when you look at the table and see yourself in the last position. But that’s not something we are focusing on right now. I know there’s a lot of people talking outside the club, there are a lot of media and a lot of people talking about Wolves, but we cannot focus on that. We just need to stick together.

“It’s obviously a tough moment for us, and nobody would have thought at the beginning of pre-season that we were going to be in this position, I would say it wasn’t true, but it’s the reality right now.

“We cannot hide from it. We cannot run from it. We need to keep working hard and basically reply with the work inside, and not with words. You can say you work hard, but if you don’t do it on the pitch, it doesn’t mean anything. All we can do is keep pushing.”

On aiming for a first win this weekend

“It would mean a lot. It is something that we’ve been waiting for a long time. It’s been 11 games that we didn’t win, and we definitely want the first win, and we believe that after the first win, the team can get even better. Sometimes things take time and good things take time, but as soon as it starts to go well, the better things will come, and that’s what we’re looking forward to.

“But they’ve [Crystal Palace] have been doing the same as last season. They keep going and they’ve been having a good momentum. They have a very balanced team, a strong team, both defensive and on the attack. They know how to defend well and counter-attack well. We’ve played them many times before so we know what we’re going to expect, but we need to look to ourselves as well.

“The quality that we have in this team, the players that we have, and what we can do to hurt them. There is nothing better than playing at home in front of our fans, and it’s going to be a different environment, but we need to show them that we are ready and that we’re going to fight.”
